Publisher's summary

A scientist reveals the groundbreaking evidence linking many major diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease, to a common root cause - insulin resistance - and shares an easy, effective plan to reverse and prevent it.

We are sick. Around the world, we struggle with diseases that were once considered rare. Cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetes affect millions each year; many people are also struggling with hypertension, weight gain, fatty liver, dementia, low testosterone, menstrual irregularities and infertility, and more. We treat the symptoms, not realizing that all of these diseases and disorders have something in common.

Each of them is caused or made worse by a condition known as insulin resistance. And you might have it. Odds are you do - more than half of all adults in the United States are insulin resistant, with most other countries either worse or not far behind.

In Why We Get Sick, internationally renowned scientist and pathophysiology Professor Benjamin Bikman explores why insulin resistance has become so prevalent and why it matters. Unless we recognize it and take steps to reverse the trend, major chronic diseases will be even more widespread. But reversing insulin resistance is possible, and Bikman offers an evidence-based plan to stop and prevent it, with helpful food lists, meal suggestions, easy exercise principles, and more. Full of surprising research and practical advice, Why We Get Sick will help you to take control of your health.

Full of solid science and practical application!

This book is wonderful! Dr Bikman’s knowledge and direction have changed my health for the better. I’m exercising more, my weight is down to my high school weight, and my high blood pressure is gone. You would be wise to read/listen to this book and pass it along to others.

Highly Recommend this book

Before I I knew this book existed, I had already changed to most of these recommendations. At 66 yrs old, I was feeling unhealthy, had gained the “Covid 18 (lbs)” and my belly fat was increasing.
So because of these problems, about a year and a half ago, after researching and finding Dr. Jason Fung (the Obesity Code), on YouTube, and others talking about a keto diet, I gave this way of eating, along with some of the physical activities, recommended in this book, a try.
My own experience of the past year +, following the recommendations in this book, even though I hadn’t read it yet, has only been great. I can get behind every word I hear in this book, because I am living proof to my own self.
What is especially great about this book is that it has the necessary information contained and easily accessible, including a helpful PDF. Additionally, along with a wealth of information, learning of insulin resistance and the ability I have to take even greater control of my own health, as I age, is kind of phenomenal! My physician was quite impressed when I told him I was learning about insulin resistance! 😁
in the past, I was the type of person, that wouldn’t deprive myself. I wanted to eat what and when I wanted. So, I wasn’t exactly sure I could even follow any “new“ way of eating, especially so completely different than I had ever done. Once again, as indicated in this book, it did become easy. It took only a few months to become my own second nature. There is no doubt, in my mind, that my brain chemistry changed, for the better. Hmmm… me, not eating breakfast??! That was my favorite meal of the day! Nevertheless, now I do not feel deprived in the least. Because of my particular make up, I am able to eat berries and certain other high-quality, high nutrition carbs in moderation, of course, and that’s all I need or want. Homemade keto waffles for lunch, Yum! Plenty of butter and a small amount of homemade, allulose, or any of the other 0 carb sweeteners, (from natural sources) indicated in the book, sweetened, berry jam.
You can also purchase these “keto” items quite readily now.
I have been able to change my lifestyle, keep my weight down and feel, very honestly, 1000 times better than I felt. I’m completely satisfied and happy with the low carb foods I am able to eat and enjoy, never counting calories. I almost don’t believe it! But, to me, there is no greater recommendation than the improvement of my own health. Even the weight loss of over 35 lbs. including the loss of 21” total, 7 1/4” of that, off my belly. Might’ve been nice if I had heard all this when I was in my 30s or 40s or 50s (no belly fat, then)! LOL!
I like to think I might have been clever enough to listen and hear it and try it, even though I did not need it as much during those decades of my life. As mentioned throughout the book, our genetics and lifestyles are all quite different. Possibly, not everyone needs this book. But because the recommendations in this book have been so incredibly helpful for me, personally, I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️‼️

Changed my life…

Helpful beyond words. Helps understand why an insulin reducing lifestyle is key to preventing many chronic diseases that we have come to accept as a part of normal aging.

Most informative book I have listened to in a very long time. At least answer the 8 questions at the end of the introduction, you will likely want to listen on

Insightful

A very interesting read. While some of the terminology went over my head (especially when he went into detail about neuroscience and what not) I appreciated the overall message, and that he gave specific examples of how to know if your insulin resistant and what to do about it in life.
