Publisher's summary

Richard K. Morgan has received widespread praise for his astounding 25th-century novels featuring Takeshi Kovacs, and has established a growing legion of fans. Mixing classic noir sensibilities with a searing futuristic vision of an age when death is nearly meaningless, Morgan returns to his saga of betrayal, mystery, and revenge, as Takeshi Kovacs, in one fatal moment, joins forces with a mysterious woman who may have the power to shatter Harlan's World forever.

Once a gang member, then a marine, then a galaxy-hopping Envoy trained to wreak slaughter and suppression across the stars, a bleeding, wounded Kovacs was chilling out in a New Hokkaido bar when some so-called holy men descended on a slim beauty with tangled, hyperwired hair. An act of quixotic chivalry later and Kovacs was in deep: mixed up with a woman with two names, many powers, and one explosive history.

In a world where the real and virtual are one and the same and the dead can come back to life, the damsel in distress may be none other than the infamous Quellcrist Falconer, the vaporized symbol of a freedom now gone from Harlan's World. Kovacs can deal with the madness of AI. He can do his part in a battle against biomachines gone wild, search for a three-centuries-old missing weapons system, and live with a blood feud with the yakuza, and even with the betrayal of people he once trusted. But when his relationship with "the" Falconer brings him an enemy specially designed to destroy him, he knows it's time to be afraid.

After all, the guy sent to kill him is himself: but younger, stronger, and straight out of hell.

Wild, provocative, and riveting, Woken Furies is a full-bore science fiction spectacular of the highest order from one of the most original and spellbinding storytellers at work today.

Woken Furies is the third Takeshi Kovacs novel, following Altered Carbon and Broken Angels.

Phenomenal book, awful performance

Different reader than the first 2 books, there were a lot of effects used that detracted from the performance and made it very difficult to understand what was being said.

New Narrator

The first two books the author repeatedly mentions the proper pronunciation of Kovac’s name. It’s said with a ch sound not a hard K at the end. It’s too bad that the narrator or the director was not familiar with the earlier work. Every time I heard Kovacks, it was like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Not a bad narrator but...

I have listened to every Richard K. Morgan book. This book was just as good as his first two. The narrator was a little bit of a shock after settling into Todd McLaren as the voice of Takeshi Kovacs. This narrator does a better job with the female voices. I only have one grip. He says Takeshi Kovacs's name wrong. He pronounces it Kovax instead of with the "ch" as in the other books. It is irritating everytime I hear it. It really takes me out of the story. But, other than that I didn't think he was horrible. However, I prefer Todd McLaren even if he female voices are a little too whispery for me.

my review

Loved it, but didn't care for how the memory sections sounded. It wouldn't have taken away from the emersion, if they have sounded like the rest of the story

Great story. Crap narration

The book is fantastic but the narration was awful its plagued by echos and william dufris was trying to hard to match Tod McLaren which made everything feel forced. Please have this book re-read by Todd McLaren.

hang on in there

after reading some of the reviews about this I started the book anyway. it was a real shock after listening to the first two and then the change of narrator really puts you off. mispronouncing the name really took some getting used to. but as the title says hang on in there half way through I got used to the narrator and the story comes through.

horrible performance

The narrator was charged between the first two books and the third. the worst I've heard. Voices that made me hope the characters would die. The different effects for different types of conversation. Halfway through there was a announcement of the end of CD 1 and start of CD 2. if I hadn't paid for it, I would not have finished it.

The sound effects on the voices verge odistracting

Performance wise excellent.Story compelling although at times I was waiting for the protagonist to say "I never thought I would be writing to Penthouse ...". I guess fan service? over all very great story and fantastic universe. Science fiction at close to its best.
