  • Anti-Heroes
    May 30 2024

This week, Britt takes us on a deep dive into the lives of three figures whose actions and legacies exist in the murky waters between heroism and infamy. Join us as we explore the controversial impacts of Henry Judah Heimlich, Charles Romley Alder Wright, and James Warren Jones.

Henry Judah Heimlich: Known for the lifesaving Heimlich maneuver, Dr. Heimlich's career is a tapestry of medical innovation and controversy. While he's celebrated for his famous technique that has saved countless choking victims, his later years were marked by contentious medical practices and theories that sparked debates within the medical community.

Charles Romley Alder Wright: A chemist who inadvertently laid the foundation for the opioid crisis, Wright first synthesized diacetylmorphine in an attempt to create a less addictive form of morphine. Little did he know, his invention would later become commercially known as heroin, heralded as a wonder drug before its profound addictive properties became known, leading to widespread misuse and suffering.

James Warren Jones: The charismatic leader of the Peoples Temple, known for promoting social equality and racial integration. However, Jones's story darkens considerably as he led his followers into the tragedy of Jonestown, culminating in the mass murder-suicide of over 900 people. His initial ideals were overshadowed by his descent into authoritarianism and paranoia.
