You want to start getting some private pay clients or maybe move more of your clients to private pay, but you're just not sure how to deal with your client or potential clients reaction to your rate.

    01:19
I talk about a quote that I read in Brene Brown's book Atlas of the Heart, and it's actually from someone named Prentis Hemphill and it says, "boundaries are the distance at which I can love you and me simultaneously." And I feel like that's a really helpful quote in thinking about how to hold the line on your private pay rates when you experience any kind of pushback.

    01:49
When you have clients pushback about your rate they're usually coming from one of two places, "I can't afford that," or, "I won't pay for that." I'm going to break each one of those into three segments: "Yes, I can afford it and I will pay for it," "No, I truly can't afford it," or "No, I really don't see the value in it. I'm not going to pay for it." Or, "maybe."

    03:17
Now a sneaky little trick that I teach my students inside of Step by Step, inside of Marketing Your Online Practice, is the pause.

    04:51
"I won't pay that for therapy." What’s being said is I don't value the therapy for that money. That doesn't mean they don't value you, it doesn't mean that they don't value therapy, but it may mean that the percentage of their income that would have to go to therapy given what they're making, it's doesn't make sense to pay more for them for therapy than they're paying for their mortgage, for example, right? Maybe they're looking for more of like a phone a friend kind of situation and they're not going to want to pay $250 a week for a phone a friend situation, they're willing to pay a copay of $20 a week, but that's it. And that's fine, we can be totally respectful about what is valuable to them.

    09:00
Let me know what you might want to hear from me next, likely about marketing, or if you're looking for online income outside of therapy, we can talk about that as well.

Today we're going to work through some of those internal critical thoughts that you might be having so that you can free yourself up to be able to live the life that you want.

    01:25
I'm going to teach you the math and the experiments that are going to let you bypass the work on your self-worth that many people will say is required before you can increase your rates.

    02:49
Atlas of the Heart by Brene Brown quote, "daring to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves even when we risk disappointing others." There will be clients that you disappoint, because you weren't a good fit in some kind of way.

    03:58
I want to share with you a story about my own therapist and how we landed on our rate together.

    07:01
Let's talk about the math to figure out your fee per hour that you need to charge to live the life you want.

    09:25
So the experiment is not, "Am I worth that much?" But does the market tolerate that much. So what that meant for me was I was going to go hard at marketing for six weeks in every way that I could think of and see what was happening.

    11:05
So once we figure out where we want your rate to be, we need to think about where do people exist who can pay that rate who are in your niche, or your ideal client, and I talk a lot about ideal client.

    13:14
When you see your first client at your full fee rate, you may do the worst therapy you've done in your life. In my very first full fee, private pay private practice client session, I threw every intervention I had ever heard of at that poor client. I felt the need to perform. So, just a little normalizing if that happens to you and also just to remember that the literature is clear, clients want to feel known, heard, understood. Build the relationship, listen with your third year, really get to know your people. And that is going to make the therapy worth it for them.

    14:18
And if you want to learn more about how to market to your ideal client, you might want to join me in a course that I have coming up.

Remember so many of us got into the field, at least in part, because we're working through our own stuff.

    03:17
"We got in this field to help people not to get rich." Those two things are not mutually exclusive. We can be helping people and living a good life.

    04:49
“If you charge X amount of money, you're greedy, you're a bad person." If I can help you to set your rate based on math, based on a super simple formula, I think it's easy to come back to those folks who are casting judgment.

    06:07
"Well, if you can charge that rate successfully and I am not being able to charge that rate successfully, then something is either wrong with you or something's wrong with me." And most people don't want to believe that something's wrong with them.

    07:08
Important to not expect other people to have healthy reactions to your healthy boundaries when they've not done their own work

    07:36
“That's not ethical, that's not legal." I have read through all of our professional ethics, every one of our professions. There is not one thing in there that says what your rates need to be. The closest at the time of this recording is in the Social Work Code of Ethics where it talks about being aware of the financial limitations of your clients.

    11:26
We have the freedom to get licensed anywhere, you might even be in a compact state where it's super easy to be able to practice in other states. Or you might get your Florida telehealth registration certificate.

    12:25
“We got in this field to help people not to make money."

    12:57
    "That's not ethical."

    13:21
    “That's taking advantage of people."

    15:19
"I couldn't pay that so it's not fair for me to charge it."

    16:17
"I think you're crappy for charging that."

    16:46
    "I would never charge that."

    17:05
"I want to be accessible." We can create accessibility in a lot of ways.

  • How to Get Full Fee Private Pay Therapy Clients in My Area (Even if I Think They Can't Afford It)

Is it true that there are really no people in your area that can afford your full fee private pay rate? Even if you've done the work to look up the highest and lowest SES socioeconomic status in your area, or even in your whole state and it tends towards low, that does not mean that there aren't pockets where there are higher tax brackets. It's far easier to market to a particular zip code or city within your state than it is to market to your entire state.

    03:48
"Oh, I don't know how to market." So when you think about concierge doctors, for example, if we Google concierge doctors in your state, those are people that I would spend time and energy to network with. So the people who are willing to pay for a concierge doctor are willing to pay for a medical spa, are willing to pay for private pay therapy, are willing to pay for high end physical therapy.

    05:26
As an online therapist, you are not limited to your city or your county. Google highest socioeconomic status in your state, you will get zip codes that pop up, we're going to market to those zip codes. And you might be saying, well, "how do I market to those?" Remember that in Psychology Today, you can list multiple zip codes, four total zip codes.

    07:13
Let's market outside your state. There's one state at the time of this recording, Florida, that you do not have to be licensed in to practice here. You can just Google “telehealth out of state provider certificate.” Number two, know that there are things called compacts that are being worked on right now so that if you are licensed in one state, you can practice in many states that have agreed to this compact. So psychologists have the PsychPact, there are pacts compacts for most of our mental health professions right now, or at least the profession is moving towards having that. Last thing here is getting true licensure in a sister state. In Florida, many people vacation here, and they vacation for like six months out of the year. And the places they come from tend to be in New Jersey and New York, if you're on the East Coast, and Ohio if you're on the west coast.
