Mit dem "Philebos" liefert Platon eine der frühesten ausführlichen Untersuchungen zur Lust in der abendländischen Philosophie. Zwar ist ihm, wie er in dem Dialog herausarbeitet, die Lust nicht das höchste Gut des menschlichen Lebens, aber als ein notwendiger Teil dessen ist sie gleichwohl nicht daraus wegzudenken. Grundlage von Platons systematischer Untersuchung zur Lust ist das in der Antike bereits zu Platons Zeit weithin bekannte physiologische Modell der Gemischtheit von Lust und Unlust.
