Two of the hobos attempt to murder the newcomer for the loot, who shoots at one and flees.

Elf Monate war es her, dass ein Eingeborener vom Stamme der Nuhuris in der Gegend um Zanaho einen riesigen Diamanten fand. Die englisch-französische Firma Priscott & Company in Lokoja entsandte daraufhin einen Schürftrupp unter Leitung des erfahrenen George McCoy nach Zanaho. Einmal im Monat schickte Priscott eine Trägerkolonne mit Medikamenten, Lohngeldern, Lebensmitteln, Werkzeugen, Perlen und Stoffen von Lokoja aus nach Zanaho, wo inzwischen außer neun Weißen auch hundert Eingeborene arbeiten.
