For syv år siden var der en stor skandale på godset Torndal. Komtesse Jeannette, der skulle giftes med Hans Anker, arvingen til godset, stak af på sin bryllupsdag med en franskmand. Nu er hun død, og på sit dødsleje beder hun indtrængende Hans om at tage sig godt af hendes lille dreng. Godset Urup har fået en ny herremand i Major Felden. Han er en brutal og herskesyg herre, og vaerst går det ud over de kønne piger.
