Acerca de esta escucha
Insights and provocations from world-renowned brand consultants, thought leaders, designers, and strategists.
We are now living in a world with over 100 brands of bottled water. The United States alone is home to over 45,000 shopping malls. And there are more than 19 million customized beverage choices a barista can whip up at your local Starbucks. Whether it’s good or bad, the real question is why we behave this way in the first place. Why do we telegraph our affiliations or our beliefs with symbols, signs, and codes?
Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits contains 20 interviews with the world’s leading designers and thinkers in branding. The interviews contain spirited views on how and why humans have branded the world around us, and the ideas, inventions, and insight inherent in the search.

This Is Marketing shows you how to do work you're proud of, whether you're a tech start-up founder, a small-business owner, or part of a large corporation. Great marketers don't use consumers to solve their company's problem; they use marketing to solve other people's problems. Their tactics rely on empathy, connection, and emotional labor instead of attention-stealing ads. When done right, marketing seeks to make change in the world.

Most entrepreneurs, even seasoned brand managers, launch first and then work on slowly transforming the new offering into a brand. A logical progression, I would agree. After all, how can you possibly launch as a brand if you don't have any customers or marketing outreach and - obviously, since you just launched a new offering - you have no legacy or advocates? The simple answer is by design. Design relates to the systematic process you have to adhere to, which is likely the primary reason you have sought to listen to this book.

Every marketer tells a story. And if they do it right, we believe them. We believe that wine tastes better in a $20 glass than a $1 glass. We believe that an $80,000 Porsche Cayenne is vastly superior to a $36,000 VW Touareg, which is virtually the same car. We believe that $225 Pumas will make our feet feel better, and look cooler, than $20 no-names... and believing it makes it true.

Why is Red Bull so popular, though everyone—everyone!—hates the taste? Humans are, in a word, irrational, basing decisions as much on subtle external signals (that little blue can) as on objective qualities (flavor, price, quality). The surrounding world, meanwhile, is irreducibly complex and random. This means future success can’t be projected on any accounting spreadsheet. To strike gold, you must master the dark art and curious science of conjuring irresistible ideas: alchemy.

It's more influential than advertising and far more effective. Can you create word of mouth for your product or idea? According to Berger, you can. Whether you operate a neighborhood restaurant, a corporation with hundreds of employees, or are running for a local office for the first time, the steps that can help your product or idea become viral are the same.

A business parable about how to create a start-up that won't trap you when you want to sell it. According to John Warrillow, the number one mistake entrepreneurs make is to build a business that relies too heavily on them. Thus, when the time comes to sell, buyers aren't confident that the company-even if it's profitable-can stand on its own. To illustrate this, Warrillow introduces us to a fictional small business owner named Alex who is struggling to sell his advertising agency.

Reseñas editoriales
The very idea of branding, says author Debbie Millman, "demands disagreement". From the literal "branding" of cattle in Ancient Egypt on through the modern day bottled water craze, voice actress Nicole Valencia creates a brand of her own in this playful, insightful, and occasionally humorous performance. On one hand, brands may seem oppressive, corporative and bland: an omnipresent cultural force that robs people of their individuality. At the same time, brands can provide an outlet for new ideas and artistic expression, and in doing so play an integral role in how people forge their identities. Love them or hate them, brands infiltrate even the most mundane aspects of life. Millman's thorough exposé offers over 20 interviews with leading voices in design and marketing.

Based on decades of experience working with small business owners, Michael Gerber will teach budding entrepreneurs his one-of-a-kind seven-step method - which is meant to be conceptualized long before the doors are ever opened.

Three short years ago, when Chris Brogan and Julien Smith wrote their best seller, Trust Agents, being interesting and human on the Web was enough to build a significant audience. But now, everybody has a platform. The problem is that most of them are just making noise. In The Impact Equation, Brogan and Smith show that to make people truly care about what you have to say - you need more than just a good idea, trust among your audience, or a certain number of followers.

Or what Steve Case might have done for PepsiCo if he hadn't left for a gaming start-up that eventually became AOL. What if Salomon Brothers had kept Michael Bloomberg, or Bear Stearns had exploited the inventive ideas of Stephen Ross? Historia
Based on an acclaimed professor's legendary strategy course at Harvard Business School, The Strategist offers a radically new perspective on a leader's most vital role. "Are you a strategist?" That's the first question Cynthia Montgomery asks the business owners and senior executives from all over the world who participate in her highly regarded executive education course. It's not a question they anticipate, but by the time the program ends, they cannot imagine leading their companies to success without being - and living the role of - a strategist.

If you cut off a spider's leg, it's crippled; if you cut off its head, it dies. But if you cut off a starfish's leg it grows a new one, and the old leg can grow into an entirely new starfish. The Starfish and the Spider argues that organizations fall into two categories: "spiders", which have a rigid hierarchy, and "starfish", which rely on the power of peer relationships.

Clever perspectives.
I wish they would have had multiple voices since it's Q and A - but I get the complications that would have come with that. At times, in the book it's difficult to remember who is talking (I'm commuting on 95 so think on and off ya know). BUT the opinions in here are great.

pretty good book about branding
I liked the insights the subjects had on branding.
I wish the narrator Nicole Vilencia wouldn’t change voice pitch for each character- it’s distracting.
She’s a narrator, not acting out the parts.
other than that strange choice she makes she does a pretty good job. Mispronounces words she doesn’t know here and there, but not too much.
Overall a good listen if you are interested in branding.

Production Value/Format could use improvement
The chapter titles should contain the interviewee name. Although I favor many of the guests featured, I found it difficult to engage with the material. Narrator did the best she could to portray the sentiment of each guest but having another person read for each interviewee would add significant value.

Great overview of ideas about branding
This book is chock full of pearls about design thinking, branding and marketing. It's like an introductory mini course that really gets you thinking about how these ideas are part of everyday life. I wish the performance had included the voices of the actual people - the audio narrator tried to use different prosody but it was clearly a challenge. I laid her effort. Anyway this book was very worthwhile.

Interesting content, poor narration
The interviews are very interesting and there is a lot of insightful discussion about branding, but the narration is robotic and the lack of an additional narrator during the interviews makes it difficult to distinguish who is saying what. I couldn't finish because it was hard to listen to, but would consider reading the book.

The people, the background, all the participants in the book are great, they come from different disciplines and really paint a relevant picture of the subject. But the narration, they audiobook is no good, i am sad i lost a credit with this, i am thinking on buying the book instead.
