Resumen del Editor

A Ciaphas Cain Anthology

This audiobook brings together 13 uproarious short stories and one novella, focused on Ciaphas Cain, Hero of the Imperium. His stories are celebrated as heroic propaganda pieces, but he’s simply trying to stay alive in a hostile galaxy.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Ciaphas Cain doesn’t mean to be a hero – he just can’t seem to help it. While trying to escape certain death, he somehow achieves unlikely victory after victory in the wildest and most dangerous warzones of the galaxy, to hilarious effect.

THE STORY

Ciaphas Cain is a true hero. Brave, stalwart, uncompromising, a cool head under fire...or is he? His legend has spread far and wide, but only Cain himself knows the truth behind his long and storied career.

Until now.

Inquisitor Amberley Vail once more delves into the Cain archive to present a selection of the man’s greatest and strangest exploits. From Cain and the Valhallan 597th hunting down the source of a warp-tainted infection that threatens to overwhelm the world of Lentonia with a starving horde of undead, to his early years with the Valhallan 12th Field Artillery fending off a tyranid invasion on a barren mining world, to the mysterious death of a fellow commissar that sees Cain’s life at risk (once again) as the killer’s attention turns to him...

Entertaining

Witty, funny, entertaining, and just great. Atypical reading (or listening) for a Warhammer novel, but quite refreshing. My first time listening to this narrator, and he didn't disappoint. Hearing his Orkish "WAAAAGH" made me laugh to the point that I spat out my sweet tea.

A wonderful introduction to character

This is the first book of commissar Cain that I listened too and I loved every minute of it. Listening to 40K can get depressing after awhile. And it was really refreshing to hear a more lighthearted adventure series. The reading was great, the stories excellent. I look forward to more of his exploits

Required Listening for Cain Fans

This is a great collection of the short stories that are often referenced in passing in the larger stories. The first story is the introduction of Ciaphas Cain (and Jurgen). All the stories are great and well written.

Overall Great but ...

Fantastic book but the sudden stop with audio commentary just ruined the tone and pace of some of the stories.

If I wasn’t a Cain fanboy before this seal it

The fantastic writing of Sandy Mitchell occupying the stellar performance from that voice actors makes this a must add to every Warhammer 40k reading pile of shame. Now I’ll just have to wait until my next credit so I can continue the exciting adventures of the Commissar and his motley crew of friends.

Turn on the tap for another delightful serving

The Ciaphas Cain novels are pure fun. I've taken in a couple of Dan Abnett's 40K novels, and the serious treatment of this universe is just not very interesting to me, The setting is absurd, so an absurdist approach to it produces the most enjoyable experience, and the character of Commissar Ciaphas Cain as well as the supporting cast provide unending delight.

The plots are just there to set up Cain to accidentally save the day while trying to save his own skin, or that's the conceit of these private memoirs. The details are not that important. It often seems like he is being entirely too cynical and self-deprecating, and the footnotes, editorial commentary and supplementation of the text with the work of other writers makes it clear that Cain doesn't provide an entirely trustworthy account of his own exploits.

The fact that this is a collection of short-stories and one novella is enjoyable. The plot details take a backseat to the character of the protagonist, so regular plot resets are quite welcome. In his novel length adventures, it's never curiosity about the resolution of the plot that keeps me listening. It's the personality of Cain himself and that of Amberly Vale that is what keeps me tuned in.

As good as I'd expect, and broader

I'm never not going to enjoy a Cain book, and the regular cast are precisely as good as they always are - the books are great in themselves, and the Audible voice actors never fail to elevate the stories even further.

This anthology uses its format to tell smaller stories: tactical, rather than strategic, engagements; local altercations; nights out gone wrong and stray vignettes. One of many highlights, though, has to be the story told from Jurgen's perspective - one that would never be seen in one of the novels.

Every new release of a Cain story is an instant buy for me, and I have yet to find one that disappoints.
