Acerca de esta escucha
“A startling, confronting, and liberating treatise.”—Holly Whitaker, New York Times bestselling author of Quit Like a Woman
What is “woman” if not “mother”?
Anything she wants to be.
Foregoing motherhood has traditionally marked a woman as “other.” With no official place setting for her in our society, she has hovered on the sidelines: the quirky girl, the neurotic career obsessive, the “eccentric” aunt. Instead of continuing to paint women without kids as sad, self-obsessed, or somehow dysfunctional, what if we saw them as boldly forging a first-in-a-civilization vision for a fully autonomous womankind? Or as journalist and thought leader Ruby Warrington asks, What if being a woman without kids were in fact its own kind of legacy?
Taking in themes from intergenerational healing to feminism to environmentalism, this personal look and anthropological dig into a stubbornly taboo topic is a timely and brave reframing of what it means not to be a mom. Our experiences and discourse around non-motherhood are central to women’s ongoing fight for gender equality. And whether we are childless by design or circumstance, we can live without regret, shame, or compromise.
Bold and tenderhearted, Women Without Kids seeks first and foremost to help valorize a path that is the natural consequence of women having more say about the choices we make and how our lives play out. Within this, it unites the unsung sisterhood of non-mothers—no longer pariahs or misfits, but as a vital part of our evolution and collective healing as women, as humans, and as a global family.

Women who opt not to be mothers are frequently warned that they will regret their decision later in life, yet we rarely talk about the possibility that the opposite might also be true - that women who have children might regret it. Drawing on years of research interviewing women from a variety of socioeconomic, educational, and professional backgrounds, sociologist Orna Donath treats regret as a feminist issue: as regret marks the road not taken, we need to consider whether alternative paths for women currently are blocked off.

It’s the nagging question more and more of us are finding harder to ignore, whether we have a “problem” with alcohol or not. In the face of how we care for ourselves otherwise, it’s hard to avoid how alcohol really makes us feel: terrible. How different would our lives be if we stopped drinking on autopilot? If we stopped drinking altogether? Frank, funny, and always judgment-free, Sober Curious is a bold guide to choosing to live hangover-free, from Ruby Warrington, one of the leading voices of the new sobriety movement.

One of the main topics of cultural conversation during the last decade was the supposed "fertility crisis" and whether modern women could figure out a way to have it all - a successful, demanding career and the required 2.3 children - before their biological clocks stopped ticking. Now, however, conversation has turned to whether it's necessary to have it all (see Anne-Marie Slaughter) or, perhaps more controversial, whether children are really a requirement for a fulfilling life.

He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

As a childfree woman, Dr. Amy Blackstone is no stranger to a wide range of negative responses when she informs people she doesn't have - nor does she want - kids: confused looks, patronizing quips, thinly veiled pity, even outright scorn and condemnation. But she is not alone in opting out when it comes to children. More people than ever are choosing to forgo parenthood, and openly discussing a choice that's still often perceived as taboo. Yet this choice, and its effects personally and culturally, are still often misunderstood.

We congratulate ourselves when we resist the donut in the office breakroom. We celebrate our restraint when we hold back from sending an email in anger. In On Our Best Behavior, journalist Elise Loehnen explains that these impulses—often lauded as unselfish, distinctly feminine instincts—are actually ingrained in us by a culture that reaps the benefits, via an extraordinarily effective collection of mores known as the Seven Deadly Sins.

She is turned away from restaurants for being inappropriately dressed and looks for the best ways to cope, i.e., reveling in the offerings of QVC and adopting a deranged pandemic dog.

Reseñas de la Crítica
“I have read countless books on the subject of chosen childlessness, and I can’t remember encountering one written with such candor, care, and precision of thought. It’s easy to be glib about this subject, to tuck into defensiveness even while espousing pride and certainty. In Women Without Kids, Ruby Warrington does just the opposite. She tells her story with deep insight, great humor, and, best of all, an endless curiosity about the motives of her own mind. She’s also done her research and knows her history, which she uses to draw important connections between the personal choices we make and the political and social landscapes that inform them. Essential reading no matter how you feel about kids!”—Meghan Daum, editor of Selfish, Shallow, and Self-Absorbed: Sixteen Writers on the Decision Not to Have Kids
“Women Without Kids is a necessary invitation for us to reconsider our relationship to and with motherhood. Traditionally, being a child-free woman is expected to come with shame and regret—Ruby’s latest work adds celebration and necessary nuance to the story of women and people of all genders intentionally living child-free.”—Rachel Cargle, founder of The Loveland Foundation, The Loveland Group, and Rich Auntie Supreme
“In Women Without Kids, Ruby Warrington offers a compassionate exploration into what can be a highly loaded and emotional topic—the choice whether or not to have children. She explores the different factors that contribute to this decision, while her honest and vulnerable sharing of her personal journey inspires deep self-reflection in readers. Women Without Kids is a must-read for anyone seeking a full understanding of all the dynamics that play into this significant life choice.”—Dr. Nicole LePera, New York Times bestselling author of How to Do the Work

So often deployed as a jingoistic, even menacing rallying cry, or limited by a focus on passing moments of liberation, the rhetoric of freedom both rouses and repels. Does it remain key to our autonomy, justice, and well-being, or is freedom's long star turn coming to a close? Does a continued obsession with the term enliven and emancipate, or reflect a deepening nihilism (or both)? On Freedom examines such questions by tracing the concept's complexities in four distinct realms: art, sex, drugs, and climate.

Historia
So often deployed as a jingoistic, even menacing rallying cry, or limited by a focus on passing moments of liberation, the rhetoric of freedom both rouses and repels. Does it remain key to our autonomy, justice, and well-being, or is freedom's long star turn coming to a close? Does a continued obsession with the term enliven and emancipate, or reflect a deepening nihilism (or both)? On Freedom examines such questions by tracing the concept's complexities in four distinct realms: art, sex, drugs, and climate.

Although kindness and self-acceptance allow us to be with ourselves as we are, in all our glorious imperfection, the desire to alleviate suffering at the heart of this mindset isn't always gentle, sometimes it's fierce.

In a winning combination of memoir, manifesto, and how-to, Tygielski shares her evolution from a Jerusalem-born child of traditional Sephardic Orthodox parents to a middle-class American suburban youth who questioned her faith to a young executive in corporate America.

For feminists, the family denies female independence and equality. Today, however, the battle has grown even fiercer, as socialists and feminists have found a global ally in the United Nations, which is using its extraordinary power to undercut the authority and the sanctity of the family around the world - even in the United States.

Anyone caring for girls today knows that our daughters, students, and girls next door are more anxious and more prone to depression and self-harming than ever before. The question that no one has yet been able to credibly answer is Why? Now we have answers. As award-winning writer Donna Jackson Nakazawa deftly explains in Girls on the Brink, new findings reveal that the crisis facing today’s girls is a biologically rooted phenomenon: the earlier onset of puberty mixes badly with the unchecked bloom of social media and cultural misogyny.

Empowering
I wish I had had this book in my twenties when I struggled more potently with feeling different for not wanting to be a mother. But at 38, I still found clarity and empowerment in Warrington’s research and personal story. I recommend it to parents, non parents by choice and non parents not by choice, alike

Feeling seen!
Women Without Kids so carefully and concisely puts into words all the reasons women do not need, want or should be expected to bear children. From difficulty in fertility to those that choose an "affirmative no", it is confirmation that women are more than and complete without the need for dependants.

Brilliant!
This book is so much more than what the title reveals. It’s a much needed, bigger conversation for women and especially at this time. Ruby has put incredible thought and work into writing this book. It’s smart, caring and thought provoking.

Finally someone that wrote about my existence!
Thank you for writing about my life and why this choice is truly our own, and ultimately that's ok. So validating and eye opening as someone that knew from a young child I didn't want to be a Mom. Never even felt Motherly to another child. I appreciate showing you emotions in the book and not editing that out, that meant a lot to me.

Create your own legacy!
I really appreciated this book for multiple reasons. As someone who has chosen to be childless prior to reading this book, I still found the material validating and thought provoking. There is more to us as women than simply our choice to procreate or not, and what a beautiful choice we have and deserve to make for ourselves and the next generation.

Don't let the title fool you, this is a must read for ALL
I heard about the author on my favorite podcast. This book made me feel seen as a Mom. No one talks about this subject! This book helped me understand I wasn't ever not enough as a Mom, but I've been trying to be a Mom in a world that makes parenting so difficult, almost impossible to survive with any autonomy still in tact. I am single Mom of 2 and this book just justified most of my inner most secret thoughts.

how we have gotten accustomed to roles and responsibilities that patriarchal societies have chosen for women
wonderful, empowering, and eye opening. it reminded me of all the goals and values that I had set for my life in my early 20's, and then forgot about them little by little as I aged; because the patriarchal society wanted me to. it's an amazing read .
