从前，如果丈夫打老婆，就算报警，警察也不会管，因为这是人家的「家务事」。但是，法不入家门，此错误的旧观念早已被打破。1993年邓如雯的杀夫案正是这种困境的真实写照。她多年来饱受丈夫暴力的折磨，最终在忍无可忍的情况下杀害了施暴的丈夫。得到人权团体、妇女团体、民意的强力支援，最后判处有期徒刑三年。此事件促使《家庭暴力防治法》于1998年开始实行，成为亚洲第一个有民事保护令的国家。
