Critic reviews

"Lindsay C. Gibson, PsyD, gives practical insight into a prevalent problem.... The book is impeccably clear.... This utter lack of confusion makes the book quite soothing, despite the heavy subject." ( Foreword Magazine)

As an adult child of someone with two emotionally immature parents (unbeknownst to me until I found this book), I have never felt more understood in my life. This book scientifically and research-based explained my experiences and who my parents are/why I have habits that I do. It has served to help me manage my parent relationships in a way that protects me from emotional and psychological hurt while also helping me to realize areas I need to improve in because of poor habits I have learned/used. I couldn't recommend this book more highly.

Fantastic and applicable

At almost 60 years of age, I finally understand myself and what led me here! Great suggestions for rebuilding a life once lost. Thank you!

The book is incredible and profound, but the voice performance was almost unbearable. A thoughtful, serious voice performance would have worked well, but there was a strident, almost scolding tone that was conveyed. Nevertheless, I will be buying this book to read in print and will recommend it. Outstanding and insightful advice for those who have parents who were unable to provide what their children needed to thrive.

Terrible voice, great book

I can't remember why I decided to listen to this book, but I'm glad I did. It is like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I told my brother to read it. It was so accurate it was freaking him out a little. It may be intense to see yourself in this book (as the parent or the child). BUT, it tells you what to do. It doesn't just open up the wound and leave you hanging. It identifies the cause and the solution.

Spooky accurate...but also a relief...

I never knew a book could make me feel so validated. I feel like I am starting to understand myself and my family more than ever. I appreciate that no one is demonized in the book amd instead you just start to feel compassion for everyone, especially yourself. This book was really helpful for me to see ways I may be acting an emotionally immature parent as well as helped me understand and identify other emotionally immature people. I feel like it helped me identify a lot of unhealthy ways of thinking that I've grown up with and it gave me a lot of good new thought patterns to replace them with. I want to go back and do the exercises now. It also gave me a lot of hope for a happier life! The narration is great as well!

So validating!
