About this listen

New York Times Best Seller

“This book is a gift! I’ve been practicing their strategies, and it’s a total game-changer.” (Brené Brown, PhD, author of the number one New York Times best seller Dare to Lead)

This groundbreaking book explains why women experience burnout differently than men - and provides a simple, science-based plan to help women minimize stress, manage emotions, and live a more joyful life.

Burnout. Many women in America have experienced it. What’s expected of women and what it’s really like to be a woman in today’s world are two very different things - and women exhaust themselves trying to close the gap between them. How can you “love your body” when every magazine cover has 10 diet tips for becoming “your best self”? How do you “lean in” at work when you’re already operating at 110 percent and aren’t recognized for it? How can you live happily and healthily in a sexist world that is constantly telling you you’re too fat, too needy, too noisy, and too selfish?

Sisters Emily Nagoski, PhD, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, are here to help end the cycle of feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Instead of asking us to ignore the very real obstacles and societal pressures that stand between women and well-being, they explain with compassion and optimism what we’re up against - and show us how to fight back.

In this audiobook, you’ll learn:

  • What you can do to complete the biological stress cycle - and return your body to a state of relaxation
  • How to manage the “monitor” in your brain that regulates the emotion of frustration
  • How the Bikini Industrial Complex makes it difficult for women to love their bodies - and how to defend yourself against it
  • Why rest, human connection, and befriending your inner critic are keys to recovering and preventing burnout

With the help of eye-opening science, prescriptive advice, and helpful exercises, all women will find something transformative in this audiobook - and will be empowered to create positive change. Emily and Amelia aren’t here to preach the broad platitudes of expensive self-care or insist that we strive for the impossible goal of “having it all”. Instead, they tell us that we are enough, just as we are - and that wellness, true wellness, is within our reach.

Critic reviews

Burnout is the gold standard of self-help books, delivering cutting-edge science with energy, empathy, and wit. The authors know exactly what’s going on inside your frazzled brain and body, and exactly what you can do to fix it. . . . Truly life-changing.”—Sarah Knight, New York Times bestselling author of Calm the F*ck Down

“Reading Burnout, I knew this was not just another self-help book that keeps us trapped by the idea of female inadequacy. It turns our struggle with stress on its head and paves a meaningful path to what the authors call ‘growing mighty’ by bravely dropping in thoroughly contemporary and refreshing truth bombs, like, yeah, the patriarchal system is the issue, and goddamn it’s time we play by our own rules!”—Sarah Wilson, New York Times bestselling author of First, We Make the Beast Beautiful

“The first sentence of Burnout says, ‘This is a book is for any woman who has felt overwhelmed and exhausted by everything she had to do, and yet still worried she was not doing “enough.”’ (I raised my hand in bed.) Emily Nagoski [and] her twin sister, Amelia, teamed up to write about how to combat stress, and they have a gift for making the self-help genre not make you want to poke your eyes out.”—Cup of Jo

Living through the COVID-19 pandemic put the fleeting nature of human life front and center, and served as a turning point in the lives of millions. Radical shifts in social interactions and ways of working, along with the prevalence of illness and grief, motivated many to reassess their priorities. A staggering number of adult workers pivoted their careers or just plain left the workforce entirely, in a phenomenon that’s been coined The Great Resignation.

Must Read for Creative Entrepreneurs

This book was passed along to me by another highly successful entrepreneur, when I asked, "Um, have you ever had an anxiety attack where you just start shaking?" It seemed like no amount of "self-care" was solving my biggest problems. This book gave me real answers. It's saved my life. Now I understand what's happening. Thank you!

Wow, must read/listen

Honestly, human beings (regardless of gender) will benefit from the psychology/mental health insight from this book. The perspective on the additional struggle for women is valuable for everyone to understand.

Male listeners might not like the writing style, since it focuses on personal anecdotes from women. But I recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their allyship skills.

This Audiobook is ACTUALLY Helpful

I have consumed a lot of different self-help material--books, articles, videos, etc.--on burnout and how to cope; many say things like "practice gratitude," which is incredibly unhelpful because the problem isn't ungratefulness (I'd liken it to giving someone a hammer when they are working with screws). I never understood why taking vacation time (to give myself time to "relax") didn't solve the problem, but I guess I know, now... and I feel I have a better idea of what I CAN do to help myself.

Validating & informative explanation why I'm spent

I loved the feminine and feminist tone of this book! Coupled with data and science, there were so many "aha" moments that explain my sheer exhaustion of the last 4 years of my life. Lots of practical advice that I could continue/ implement immediately. I will listen to this again! Drs. Emily and Amelia kept me entertained and intrigued and I loved the personal stories interwoven. A great listen for any other exhausted overworked adults, especially those in the middle age, raising kids and elderly parents sandwich!

Great Female Focused Resource Exploring Burnout

Having read Emily Nagoski's 'Come As You Are' as well as attending her in person training I was familiar with her previous work and appreciate her perspectives. This book is another wonderful resource written and narrated by Emily and her twin Amelia. I appreciate their discussion and exploration of topics regarding burnout along with practical ideas that individuals can implement. This book is female and female identified focused and they discuss this openly from the beginning. For those wanting to explore the discussion of burnout with causes, influences, and practical skills this book is sure to be one for your shelves. The science and personal stories feel informative and inviting and both sisters' voices are wonderful to listen to. Definitely recommend.

Everything is soooo good

I've never listened to a self help book in one setting, I just couldn't stop. I will reread it at least two more times. Thanks for changing my life.

Helpful book

Non-standard view of everyday problems. Original helping techniques.

Liked the tools for coping with patriarchy (ooh) and, overall, the links between science and intersectional feminism.

This was the most entertaining self help book I have ever read. The authors, 2 sisters, did a great job of making me feel like they were my sisters too. I loved the message. loved the presentation.
