About this listen

The galaxy’s worst bounty hunter just might be its most relentless hero.

Esper Richelieu is a wizard with a mission: To make the galaxy a better place one lost soul at a time.

Donning the trappings of an interstellar bounty hunter, she delves into the galaxy’s underworld to search out those most in need of help. Whether it’s a teenage runaway or an actor kidnapped by cultists, the victim comes first.

Money is an afterthought. That confuses a lot of clients.

But sometimes the best way to get someone to accept the help they need is to convince them to pay for it. Other times, clients unwittingly fund their own reparations by hiring the last person who’d want to aid them in continuing their wicked ends.

But are pure intentions enough against the vilest forces in the galaxy?

Fun!

I bought this primarily because of the length, and it did take me a while to get into it.
My normal sci-fi/fantasy doesn't include a lot of swearing, so that did take a bit of getting used to.
However, once I got into it, I really grew to like the characters, especially Kubu. I liked that Esper grappled with her moral conundrums.
I loved that sex is considered normal, and who you have sex with is pretty much your business. I also liked that it didn't go into graphic detail. It doesn't rule out jealousy or even bigotry, but demonstrates that we've largely progressed to a point that who you bonk is generally accepted as perfectly fine, as long as it's between adult, consensual, sentient creatures.
The "arguing with the universe" was a novel taken on magic, and essentially boils down to a contest of wills, whether with the typical laws of nature, or against another wizard. I didn't find it any more unbelievable than any number of similar premises, be it appealing to a deity of some sort (like clerics or paladins in DND), it being a natural ability (elves and other fae folk in any number of universes from Tolkien to Pratchett to Green), or an all pervasive concept (e.g. the Force).

Riveting and Cheerful romp

Loveable characters, mostly episodic storytelling but with an elegant storyarc. Brilliant narration reminiscent of a radio play. Funny and good-hearted.

Not bad overall.

It wrapped up all the little loose ends from the first series maybe a little too well. But it was entertaining overall.

great story, solid character development

great work. long read and a great value for folks that listen to a lot of books while they work, but also one of my favorite writers and narrators.

this series plus black ocean complete is the absolute best way to spend 2 credits on audible.
