We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Story
When facing contentious issues such as screen time, food choices, and bedtime, children often act out or shut down, responding with reactivity instead of receptivity. This is what New York Times best-selling authors Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson call a No Brain response. But our kids can be taught to approach life with openness and curiosity. When kids work from a Yes Brain, they’re more willing to take chances and explore. They’re more curious and imaginative. They’re better at relationships and handling adversity.

So many of us feel lonely, unfulfilled, or trapped—in our roles and relationships, in cycles of self-sabotage and bad decisions, by our patterns and misguided attempts to feel happy or to feel something. According to existential psychotherapist Sara Kuburic, it doesn’t have to be so difficult. Really. The answer is found in facing ourselves—whatever version that might be, regardless of whether we like the person we see reflected back to us. It’s about accepting full responsibility for the choices and actions that create our reality.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

Heralded by the New York Times and Time as the couples therapy with the highest rate of success, Emotionally Focused Therapy works because it views the love relationship as an attachment bond. This idea, once controversial, is now supported by science, and has become widely popular among therapists around the world. In Hold Me Tight, Dr. Sue Johnson presents Emotionally Focused Therapy to the general public for the first time. Johnson teaches that the way to save and enrich a relationship is to reestablish safe emotional connection and preserve the attachment bond.

"Most people think of love as a feeling," says David Richo, "but love is not so much a feeling as a way of being present." In this audiobook, Richo offers a fresh perspective on love and relationships - one that focuses not on finding an ideal mate, but on becoming a more loving and realistic person. Drawing on the Buddhist concept of mindfulness, How to Be an Adult in Relationships explores five hallmarks of mindful loving and how they play a key role in our relationships throughout life.

Publisher's summary
What happens when your relationship no longer feels like the one you said "yes" to?
Couples therapist Dr. Tracy Dalgleish has spent the last seventeen years dedicated to helping hundreds of couples in distress find hope and healing, sometimes by staying together and other times not. Breakdowns in communication, lack of intimacy, infidelity, overbearing in-laws and exes (to name a few)―she's seen it all.
Shortly after the birth of her first child, Dr. Tracy suddenly began to see herself in her clients' narratives. Despite the overwhelming joy she felt as a new mother, she also found herself welling up with anger and resentment toward her partner as she began shouldering more than half the domestic load and childcare labor in their marriage. In time, she found herself uttering the very words she'd heard countless times in her office from her clients: I didn't sign up for this.
Part memoir, part self-help, Dr. Tracy Dalgleish's debut book provides a rare look inside real therapy sessions with four couples―and into her own marriage. With unflinching candor and heartfelt empathy, she digs to the root of the issues that fuel our day-to-day relationship conflicts and illuminates the common struggle of what it means to be human: the incredible difficulty of showing up wholly and authentically in our most intimate relationship with others and with ourselves.

Story
The brain is a marvelous and complex organ that takes decades to fully mature, and no stage in that long process is more critical than the one we call the “toddler” years. During this period—from about one year old to three years old—a child transforms from a helpless infant into a running, chatting, insatiably curious little person with distinctive traits and interests. So, what is happening in the brain during this metamorphosis? How do humans acquire the motor, linguistic, and social skills that define this vital childhood period? Lise Eliot offers answers to these intriguing questions.

Very Informative!
Knowing we can’t change anyone, I liked most of the tools and examples she provided. Great narrating also!

This book has lots of different situations. Great ideas to consider.
I liked the presentation. Easy to follow. It was always engaging and informative. Went back and reread with my wife. What a great idea. Made a positive change in our lives. I think it’s a must read for couples.

Few insights, unnecessary personal narrative
Will this book be useful for you? If you can see the problems in these real situations from the book, probably not:
"I've had no job for years and bought a boat without discussing it with my wife first."
"My mom told my wife she was fat and she wasn't losing the baby weight fast enough. My mom went in to accuse my wife of not doing enough special things for her husband. When my wife looked to me and started to cry I did nothing."
"I picked him up and he was mad, and I didn't do anything, so why is he mad? What did I do?" Well he just said he got off the phone with his ex wife who wanted to change some custody days. "Yeah but what did I do to make him mad??" Even the therapist wants to blurt out It's not ABOUT you!
"I planned complicated meals for every day this week and instead he made something simple when other stuff came up and time was limited! Why can't he follow instructions??"

Motivating book
I often read self-help books and get totally motivated and then, after a few weeks I drop back into my bad habits and old routines. I really think this book may help me stick with my changes better than usual.

A must for anyone in relationship
This book was so beautifully constructed. It felt like a mirror helping me to process my own relationship plus a guideline going forward. It should be compulsory reading for anyone in relationship. Highly recommended.

Very helpful
This is a realistic look at issues that come up in marriage / partnership. It gives lots of examples of issues and how to understand and work through them.
