Publisher's summary

Book one in an interconnected series of STANDALONES.

Beyond the realm of gods, two cities stand at the brink of despair, and a dark destiny awaits Death's newest Maiden.

Long ago, Requiem was plagued by war and abandoned by the gods but Death saved the suffering people, giving each soul a hundred years of immortality. With that grace, he also sent two Maidens. One of Life, for healing and comfort, and one of Death, the only person in the world with the ability to kill.

Generations later, the Life Maiden is missing and Princess Deyanira is nothing more than a trained weapon. A hunter. A murderer wrenched into Death's dark court to have the name of her next victim seared onto her palm.

She is the enemy of this land. But, when she's given the chance to bring peace through marriage and finally show her father's kingdom her worth, she is viciously tricked into marrying the wrong man, ruining the future of the damaged realm. Her only hope to give something back to the world is to find the missing Life Maiden.

Now, eternally bound to her enemy and dragged into the dark burlesque show her new husband is bound to, she must fight to keep herself free. And her heart. Especially when she becomes the hunted.

Critic reviews

"A deliciously sinful experience centered around a show of life and death at the hands of the Maiden. Fans of Kerri Maniscalcos Kingdom of the Wicked and Stephanie Garbers Caraval will love this story of the Death Maidens one chance to defy Death himself, combined with a searing romance that adds an irresistible layer of passion." - Jessica, @books_and_crafts

The book is amazing the female narrator drove me nuts.

The story for this book is so fun. I loved it! I did have to change to reading the book from audible. The female narrator makes every word end in “uh” good-uh. Okay-uh. No-uh. Don’t-uh.
Drove me crazy so I stopped listening. Which is so sad because I LOVE Teddy.
The book it self is amazing!

Incredible Narration!

This is hands down THE BEST audiobook I've listened to in 2024. Teddy & Jacci make this a must listen. Now for the story - I am in love with the world building, the found family elements, and the character development and growth. Can't wait for the next installment!

Beautiful narration & story!

I had no idea when I purchased this that it was in duet narration format, so I was very excited when I realized it was recorded in my favorite format. Not only were the narrators amazing, the intricate audio details (violin) made the story beyond par. The story itself was also riveting, I would definitely recommend reading/listening to it!

My new favorite audiobook

This has now become one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to this year. Between the unique story, the angst, enemies to lovers, witty banter and emotion scenes it had everything you could ever want in a story. This duet style narration is 10/10. I really loved the incorporation of music, especially in between chapters. The story sucks you in and the narrators did an absolutely fantastic job throughout the entire book. The only downside is the entire book is told from the female main characters POV which is great but I think with how much depth Orin and his story had it would have been nice to split it with his POV, especially in the later chapters in the book. Overall, highly recommend this audiobook!

Sets a new standard for audiobooks

This is the way all audiobooks should have ever been made. The dual narration drew me into the story deeper than any other audio. The music added a depth to the story and wove in seamlessly to heighten the emotions of the scene. I cannot recommend this audiobook enough, and hope all future productions look to this one as the gold standard.

All the stars

Absolutely brilliant story!!!! I enjoyed this so very much, it might become my whole personality. The elements of world building, found family, life/death, and mystery were beautifully woven together into this captivating saga. A true masterpiece! An opus!
As for the performance, well, it just set a massive standard for production/narration excellence.

Narration was amazing!

This story was unique and I loved that there was a strong love story between FMC and MMC, but an even stronger one for the FMC with herself and the other characters. Solid narration. Love love!

It’s so good!

Very rarely do I feel like listening to the book was better than physically reading it, but this was done so incredibly well - I am so glad I listened! The story is like Moulin Rouge meets fantasy and tons of twists, I loved it.

Could not stop listening

Amazing duet audio, at the beginning it was a little slow for me and I had some back and forth with it but after that the story was very interesting and the performance was incredible, I might be a little bit bias cause I love Teddy Hamilton's work so much, but indeed a great story
