Publisher's summary
January 1937. Jack Miller has just about run out of options. His shoes have worn through, he can't afford to heat his rented room in Tooting, and he longs to use his training as a specialist wireless operator instead of working in his dead-end job. When he is given the chance to join an arctic expedition, as communications expert, by a group of elite Oxbridge graduates, he brushes off his apprehensions and convinces himself to join them.
As the young men set sail from a gloomy Britain on the verge of war, Jack feels the overwhelming excitement of not knowing what lies ahead. Little can he imagine the horrors that await him in their destination, Gruhuken, a place that cannot escape the savage echo of its past.

In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other's company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story.

Story
This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Story
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Travel journalist and mountaineer Nick Grevers awakes from a coma to find that his climbing buddy, Augustin, is missing and presumed dead. Nick’s own injuries are as extensive as they are horrifying. His face wrapped in bandages and unable to speak, Nick claims amnesia - but he remembers everything. He remembers how he and Augustin were mysteriously drawn to the Maudit, a remote and scarcely documented peak in the Swiss Alps. He remembers how the slopes of Maudit were eerily quiet, and how, when they entered its valley, they got the ominous sense that they were not alone.

Excellent and haunting.
I have never read anything by Michelle Paver before so this was a pleasent surprise. A chillng ghost-story set in the most desolate and isolated enviroment imaginable and with characters that really feels alive. I'm usually not very fond of novels written in diary-form but Michelle Paver's prose pulls it through all the way to the ghastly ending.
I recommend the book to anyone interested in good ghost-stories and will certainly look up her other works as well.

Bleak, Beautiful Terror
Would you consider the audio edition of Dark Matter to be better than the print version?
I haven't tried it in print form, but the reader brought an incredible richness to the experience. Aside from the excellent voice, Jeremy Northam worked it so you could feel the dry cold in every breath.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dark Matter?
When the pole he definitely cut down and destroyed is back.
What about Jeremy Northam’s performance did you like?
He has a rugged sharpness to his voice that fleshes out the atmosphere.
If you could rename Dark Matter, what would you call it?
A Cold Post
Any additional comments?
The atmosphere here is thick enough to float rocks in. The setting of the story is wonderfully bleak and vivid. I also like that it makes use of a rather underutilized monster of nordic folklore.

Just a beautiful story
So many frightening books are clunky with matte characters but this book was just beautiful from the landscape to the ghost to the dogs and the main character was compellingly heartbreaking. I'd read anything she writes -- and next time I will read her book not listen as her work deserves that

Jack London meets a more literary Stephen King
Paver has become a new favorite of mine. I haven’t before come across this unique combination of psychological thriller/historical fiction/adventure. Nothing is gratuitous, or predictable, and the characters she develops are as complex as they need to be for their purposes to the story — something that will make sense once you’ve read/heard it. Jeremy Northampton’s narration couldn’t be more perfect.

I'll think twice next time I want to be alone.
Would you listen to Dark Matter again? Why?
Yes I would listen again. After listening to this book, I can imagine what total darkness, cold, and lack of human contact can do to the human mind...especially with something haunting your every move.
What did you like best about this story?
The time frame was one of my favorites. The fact that this was an expedition is also one of my favorite settings for horror.
Have you listened to any of Jeremy Northam’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No
If you could take any character from Dark Matter out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Jack. Probably because he was there for all of the expedition, where all other characters were there only part of the time. Jack endured all the little island could throw at him until the end. He also became a dog lover in the end as well.
Any additional comments?
Inside the mind of a man, alone, literally at the end of the earth, with only darkness and a dog as constant companions. Or, is there something else out there?

Great scary story!!
Creepy atmosphere, building up tension throughout the story. I really had no idea how it was going to end. I was on the edge of my seat. Great narrator, too, with a natural-sounding accent, good reading pace, added atmosphere to the story.
Characters were complex & believable. I really enjoyed this story all the way through.
