It was easy to protect Taiwan and maintain its separation from an unusually weak China. But China has been getting stronger for many decades. Now China is on track to become the world's largest economy again. They already have the largest navy, and while the United States is a formidable military foe - American forces are spread around the world and are focused on Ukraine and Russia. China can focus all its forces on their one primary goal - the unfinished business of their civil war - taking control of Taiwan. The Taiwanese people enjoy their freedom, prosperity, and democracy. They don't want to be reunited with the Chinese motherland unless communist rule ends. But the Taiwanese speak of invasion in terms of "when, not if." At some point the United States may be unable or unwilling to prevent a Chinese invasion. Taiwan's generals say China will be ready to invade their island by 2025. U.S. Air Force General Mike Minihan says that war with China is likely "before 2025." Will China invade Taiwan in 2024? There are many reasons to assume the odds will never be more in their favor, and that China will achieve reunification with Taiwan soon - no later than the autumn of 2024.
