Funny, to root for thieves

I won this audio book in a give-away. I had entered said give-away because I like fantasy stories, and because I enjoy Derek Perkins' narration. I've listened to many hours of another series narrated by Derek Perkins, and it is like listening to a friend now.

I really enjoyed the story. There are guilds (something I've always been fascinated with), there's magic, there's friendship, and betrayal,and, of course, there is a mystery to solve and probably the world to rescue.

Jack has to learn to work in a team, and at some point, he appreciates that the benefits are greater than his independence as a solo thief.

The characters are likable, the world is fascinating. The story had a nice closure but for the epilogue. Now I have to know how the story goes on. Unfortunately, the sequels aren't available as audio book yet.

I was happily listening to what I thought was a nice story when the plot grabbed me and held me strongly till the end. i listen to multiple books at once unless one is so compelling I can't switch to another. Doesn't happen often so I know that when it does I have a gem in my hand. hey

I was looking for my next adventure story and was not disappointed. From the first word to the last I’m hooked.

Better...

Derek Perkins doors a fantastic job bringing these characters to life; a job made easier by having good compelling characters to portray. this is some of Ben Hale's best work to date. I'm looking forward to continuing the series.

a few gaps and contrivances, but, a gripping tale

Where does Jack of Thieves rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book places near but not at the top. The editing may be to blame.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jack is the only character given full development, and his world is laid out for us as his understanding of his work grows. Maybe the world he lives in should rank as a character? The world would be my choice of favorite character, but that's really pushing the definition, isn't it?

Have you listened to any of Derek Perkins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He's the best. Pretty much any five star book he reads will be worth the credit. If the book wasn't up to it by itself, this reader breathes life into it. However, this book is good even on its own.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

He thought he knew what he wanted, Who's left laughing?

There are some jumpy parts where whole chapters were apparently deleted prior to publishing, and the final editing leaves gaps or jars in the overall pacing. Perhaps the publisher should not have been so anal about keeping to schedule -- the missing chapters would have had some interesting material necessary to fully understand the story. If those chapters were cut out just to make more money on the sequel, then that's just cheap. Shame on the editors and publishers, if that was the case. I can't tell as the audio sequel is not out yet.

performance for male voices was good but females are iffy. overall the story is good but nothing earth shattering.

Super Thieving Fun.

I was already a fan of Ben Hale, so I was able to slip right into this story. The seemingly overconfident Jack who is able to overcome almost any obstacle kept my interest. His internal conflict between his skills and his profession worked for me. Derek Perkins preformed great, as always. This book kept me up at night and always wanting more. I was grateful that the next books were already available, because I don't think I could have waited for them. I like being able to listen to an good story without foul language or explicit sex scenes.
