Publisher's summary

Surviving the zombie apocalypse requires supplies—like booze, weapons, and toilet paper—in the second prequel to the Mountain Man series.

Living off the land and adapting to a changing environment takes a special individual with the unique skills, training, and determination necessary to survive. Gus Berry is not that individual. The former house painter barely made it out of Annapolis as its population underwent a violent transformation, leaving everyone he knew or loved dead—or undead.

Now, Gus needs food and booze, weapons and armor, clothing that fits, and above all, toilet paper, preferably two-ply. But getting his hands on any of these essentials requires the one thing he can’t face doing, and that’s leaving his modern mountain fortress and returning to Annapolis and the horrors that roam its streets in search of the living.

With winter looming, Gus must procure these much-needed supplies quickly, before the snow piles too high and blocks the roads. And that’s when he’ll face the greatest challenge of all: maintaining his sanity . . .

I'm going to miss my Mountain Man!

I've now listened to every one of the books in this series and I am going to miss my friend Gus! This is my favorite zombie series. It was crass, emotional, funny and suspenseful. You are quickly drawn in and find yourself loving, hating, cheering for and jeering the characters. Blackmore wrote a magical series.

Feels like a recap

Not really any new content. This felt like a recap of the early events in the series. I still enjoyed it. Great narration by R.C. Bray.

Another great one.

When I first read this series, back when i found the omnibus of 1-3 three and a half years ago, I was struck by one thing that no one else had hit on.
Toilet paper.
While this series has touched on a number of other topics, and is still one of my favorites, the realism I found in this series compared to others was a welcome surprise. I continue to plan on reading/listening to it, and commend Mr. Blackmore in his forethought of little things that none of us question.
I also pray that RC Bray continues to narrate it. His vocal skills bring Gus and other characters a life of their own.

Better than Prequel 1

This Prequel 2 is better than Prequel 1. The author is still obsessed with Gus's bowel functions and flashbacks, but not as bad in Prequel 1. Descriptions of Gus prepping and stocking up are well done, as are the problems his alcoholism is causing. All in all, this is an interesting Prequel, but the stories in Mountain Man Omnibus are much better.

if you are a Gus fan it won't disapoint

I really enjoyed this book. It's a great story that helps fill in a lot of Gus's back story. I kind of hope there are more.

Early .5 is a Great Addition the MM storyline

As other reviewers have said, this should not be the first book you read in the MM series. It is an excellent addition to the story, it just shouldn't be your intro. Blackmore delves into the gradual madness of being totally alone and basic day to day survival after the end of the world. There are a few zombie encounters, and living human ones, but this is about Gus' inner monologue as he slowly adjusts and crumbles realizing the horror of his situation. RC Bray has a voice that can make anything sound interesting and he does here on the Audible version.

great prequel #2

This 2nd prequel was a great add on to the first. It will give you a better understanding to our wonderful Gus. But it will also make you feel sad for him and his slip into alcoholic uncontrollable state.
