Publisher's summary

Over the course of a single week, a woman who is ready to die discovers an unexpected reason to live.

Following the deaths of her husband and son, Helen Cartwright returns to the English village of her childhood after living abroad for six decades. Her only wish is to die quickly and without fuss.

Helen retreats into her home on Westminster Crescent, becoming a creature of routine and habit. Then, one cold autumn night, a chance encounter with an abandoned pet mouse on the street outside her house sets Helen on a surprising journey of friendship.

Sipsworth is a reminder that there can be second chances. No matter what we have planned for ourselves, sometimes the world has plans of its own. Simon Van Booy's lyrical storytelling is a delight even as it will fill your heart.

The Book of a Lifetime

What a beautiful treasure. At 59 this takes me back to the books I loved as a child, while filling a void that I live with today. Perfect in every way.

A Lovely Heartwarming Story

I so enjoyed this sweet story about an aging woman whose lonely life is turned around by her encounter with a small furry neighbor. The characters are beautifully drawn. The story is suitable for older kids/young adults, but can also be enjoyed on another level by older adults. It caused this septuagenarian to think about many aspects of getting older and how we do or don’t adapt to change. Read by the wonderfully expressive voice artist, Christine Rendel, it was a delight from start to finish. Highly recommended.

This story was so short but oh so lovely.

I loved the relationships written about within and delighted in sharing Helen’s journey. Such surprises await the reader.

The danger of preconceptions and the power of empathy

This book gave me comforting joy. I especially liked how the unlikeliest of creatures is the catalyst for overcoming preconceptions and the rebirth of a withering ability to empathize.

Loved this book!

So sweet. So tender. And sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. A very dear book. ❤️❤️❤️ Delighted that Diane Rehm selected this as her June 2024 book, or I’d never have read.
