Publisher's summary
How well would you cope after being summoned to rule a kingdom in an RPG?
Sean de Courcy is a gamer with a maxed out warrior build on a popular MMORPG. When the desperate rulers of a declining kingdom need a warrior to help lead them to triumph over their enemies, their summoning spell picks Sean. Their world obeys the rules of an RPG, so although Sean has no real world fighting experience, he is exactly the person they need to manage the kingdom, increase the levels of the PCs, and lead their armies to victory.

Story
Their peace was a fragile thing, but it had endured for seven years, mostly because the people of Darassus and the king of the Naor hordes believed his doom was foretold upon the edge of the great sword hung in the hall of champions. Unruly Naor clans might raid across the border, but the king himself would never lead his people to war so long as the blade remained in the hands of his enemies. But when squire Elenai’s aging uncovers evidence that the sword in their hall is a forgery, she’s forced to flee Darassus for her life, her only ally the reckless, disillusioned Kyrkenall.

Story
Centuries ago, the murder of a beloved king tore apart the Kingdom of Caledun. The land was plunged into chaos and thousands perished. A new order was established in an attempt to return Caledun to its former glory. It failed, but in its place rose the beginnings of the Code. During this same period, the mystical caretakers of the Great Wood retreated from the world of Kal Maran, their disappearance an ominous harbinger of the suffering that was to follow. The Great Wood now grows out of control. Cities, towns, and villages have fallen before the relentless march of the forest.

Alright, no need to panic. Instead of never waking from my crash, I found myself relocated. Before the accident, I was a woman in her late 20s, working as a mid-level banker who was a rising star destined for greatness. uniquely different
Let us start with the narration, I had yet to come across this narrator before and he is really good and for me that is saying something because if I don't like the narration then I won't listen to the book I would instead read it myself. There was on thing that kept driving me nuts and it was the robotic voice that would read stats, not only was it hard to understand but hard to listen to and each time I heard it it completely took me out of the story.
Spoilers below
The storyline overall was average I would have like to have heard a bit more about King Carlos journey training when he first went to the necromancer for help. I feel like some of the main character lacked a bit of depth. Also I couldn't help but think what if these people in the kingdoms were not entirely real people? I continued to listen tho because the storyline is unique I liked the idea of the gods ruling over a game like world but the ending just seemed to easy. Yes, I will most likely re-read this book again after all I listened to it for days on end and there were a time or two that thought wait what is going on and how did it come to be so? Most likely because of all the marching and conquring. The book was extreamly long which is a benefit, if a book isn't atleast 8 hours long then I don't want to waste a credit. I enjoyed the fighting and conccuring the way King Carlos aka Sean De Qorcy used not just his hight stats bit also his mind when dueling and fighting. when I mention this I am thinking of several different scenes. I also thought it very funny when Sean says, "almost better then see right"? And then response, "You must not be doing it right." that was the funniest thing said in this book and it came out of nowhere catching me completely of guard. I wish there had been a bit more of the main character talking with different people in the kingdom I was half way into the book when I thought are their children in the kingdoms but then I remembered the boy who had to wait 10 years to get his menus and the children spoken of during King Carlos return. And lastly yes I know my that's are thrown all over the place but I am multitasking, I don't like how many times King Carlos says "remember this moment... once is ok but he said it several times ek. This book is not bad expecially for someone who just started writing which is what I assume from the authors notes. I look forward to what he co.es up with next amd if he needs any ideas I might have a few.

A couple of gripes!
So Mr. Mulroney, are you trying to make fun of your readers as being to dumb to notice that you use a Lance (a weapon used while on horseback) as a two handed melee weapon. You slice heads off and when done place it on your back like a two handed sword. REALLY! Then you have gall to use a RAPIER (a weapon used in duels between lightly armored men) while in heavy armor. You must have watched to many pirate or musketeer movies. I'll not ruin the ending but it was to convenient. I was thinking of returning the book but I listened to the whole story and I'm just not that way.

- LITRPG Audiobook Reviews
- 09-18-23
Glad I was called to listen
"Summoned!: To an RPG World: Isekai - LitRPG," written by Oisin Muldowney and expertly narrated by Ryan Krichbaum, is a captivating audiobook that thrusts listeners into the thrilling realm of an Isekai LitRPG. This engaging tale takes us on an epic adventure filled with game strategy, character growth, morality, and the challenges of ruling a kingdom in a world governed by RPG rules. While not without its minor flaws, this audiobook offers an enjoyable and immersive experience, making it a must-listen for fans of the genre.
The story revolves around Sean de Courcy, an ordinary gamer with a maxed-out warrior build in a popular MMORPG. When he is unexpectedly summoned to a kingdom on the brink of collapse, he finds himself in a world that operates according to the rules of a role-playing game. Despite lacking real-world combat experience, Sean is chosen to lead the kingdom, level up the player characters (PCs), and lead their armies to victory.
One of the audiobook's strengths lies in its focus on character growth and interpersonal relationships. While there is plenty of attention to game mechanics, menus, and tech trees, Muldowney delves deep into the emotional and moral struggles of the characters. Sean's journey from a humble gamer to a leader burdened with responsibilities is both relatable and engaging. The audiobook explores themes of friendship, morality, and the complexities of navigating a game system's ethical framework.
Character diversity is another commendable aspect of "Summoned!" Muldowney introduces a wide range of characters, each with their distinct personalities and backgrounds. The main character, Sean, is likable and relatable, making it easy for listeners to invest in his journey. His interactions with a certain ally, whom I won't spoil, add depth and intrigue to the narrative, keeping listeners eagerly anticipating each twist and turn.
"Summoned!" is a substantial audiobook, and while its length allows for in-depth world-building and character development, it does have moments in the mid-game narrative where it feels a bit of a slog. Some listeners might find themselves longing for a more streamlined storyline. However, it's essential to note that the audiobook still manages to maintain its fun and engaging nature throughout.
One could argue that this audiobook could have been divided into multiple volumes, given its word count surpassing 300,000 words. Nevertheless, it successfully presents a complete and satisfying story, leaving listeners with a sense of fulfillment.
Muldowney's world-building skills are praiseworthy, creating a realm that adheres to RPG rules while introducing unique elements that set it apart from other works in the genre. The incorporation of a "moral necromancer" is a refreshing twist, challenging the typical conventions of the genre and adding depth to the narrative.
However, there are some minor issues with realism, particularly in combat scenes. The protagonist's use of a lance as if it were a sword and the portrayal of short bows may leave some readers questioning the author's understanding of these weapons. Similarly, scenes where the heavily armored horse navigates improbable locations within a castle can be comical.
The protagonist's personality and decision-making processes can be perplexing at times. His actions, such as capturing a city only to avoid occupying it, can seem inconsistent. Nevertheless, these decisions contribute to the complexity of Sean's character, showcasing the internal conflicts he faces in this unfamiliar world.
The author's portrayal of morality within the narrative is thought-provoking. Sean's reluctance to take decisive action against single threats due to a misunderstood sense of "goodness" contrasts starkly with his willingness to commit drastic acts, such as burning down an entire city and its inhabitants. This paradox adds layers to his character, exploring the intricate interplay between morality and survival.
While the audiobook introduces the concept of base-building, it may leave some listeners wanting more in terms of interaction with the base itself. Sean's manipulation of resources and management of the base are primarily depicted through the UI, leading to a somewhat detached experience. This aspect could have been more engaging if the protagonist had been more directly involved with the base.
Muldowney's worldbuilding efforts are commendable, with maps and intriguing details that create a vivid picture of the story's setting. However, there are occasional inconsistencies in geography and directions, which may distract attentive readers.
Antagonists in "Summoned!" are one of the weaker points of the narrative. Some characters fall into the "evil for evil's sake" trope, lacking the complexity that would have made them more compelling adversaries. This shortcoming becomes especially evident in the resolution of the final conflict, which feels somewhat rushed given the extensive buildup.
Ryan Krichbaum's narration of "Summoned!" is fair, though it may not stand out as exceptional. His delivery effectively conveys the story, but some listeners might have preferred a more dynamic range of character voices to enhance immersion.
In conclusion, "Summoned!: To an RPG World: Isekai - LitRPG" offers a captivating and entertaining audiobook experience. While it has its minor flaws, including occasional realism issues and pacing challenges, it succeeds in delivering an engaging narrative filled with character growth, strategic gameplay, and moral dilemmas.
For fans of LitRPG and Isekai genres, this audiobook is a worthwhile addition to your collection. Oisin Muldowney's storytelling skills shine through, and the unique twists on genre conventions keep the narrative fresh and exciting. Despite its length, "Summoned!" provides a complete and satisfying story that leaves listeners eagerly anticipating the author's future projects. So, dive into this RPG world and embark on a thrilling adventure with Sean de Courcy – you won't regret it. Welcome to the world of LitRPG; that's what it's all about.
