In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. Story
Ten years after the collapse, Huxley has built a good life again. He has a loving wife, a farm with fields of golden barley, and a daughter with a strange and wonderful gift. Then the slavers come. Working out in the fields during the attack, Huxley returns too late. His daughter has been taken, and his wife is bleeding out, her last whispered words about a man with a scorpion tattoo on his neck. Where do the slavers go? Huxley has no idea. He knows only that they head east, and so will he, setting out on foot across the desert of the Wastelands.

Story
In the beginning, the gods destroyed the world. Five hundred years later, things haven’t gotten much better for humans. The demigods that were left behind to guard over humanity have been using them as fodder for an endless civil war between themselves, and the humans just go on dutifully slaughtering each other, battle after battle. It’s not all bad, though. Perry McGown makes his living off those bloody, stinking battlefields. He works on a crew that reclaims all the spent shell casings. But if anyone found out that he was a deserter from the war, he’d be executed for heresy.

They didn’t know the fear and respect his name invoked in the shadowy underworld of covert operations. They didn’t know that when it came to protecting his family, he was without conscience, without compassion, and without equal. But they would soon find out.

Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

As the first waves of injured bystanders, guardsmen, and rioters arrived at hospitals, it became apparent that a deadly new disease had been unleashed on the population. Whether the virus was naturally occurring or an escaped lab experiment, Cade hadn't a clue and wasn't especially concerned until he learned of its unprecedented virulence, unusual method of transference, and the fact that, according to the news, it brought the newly dead back to life, semi-mindless, and with an insatiable desire to feed on the flesh of the living.

The Superpox-99 virus has wiped out nearly the entire human race. Governments have collapsed. Cities have become graveyards filled with unspeakable horror. People have resorted to scavenging from the dead, or taking from the living. The entire industrialized world has become a wasteland of abandoned cars, decaying bodies, and feral animals. To stay alive, U.S. Deputy Marshal Mason Raines must forage for food, water, and gasoline while outgunning those who seek to take advantage of the apocalyptic anarchy. Together with his giant Irish wolfhound, Bowie, he aligns with survivors of the town of Boone in a life and death struggle against a gang of violent criminals. With each deadly encounter, Mason is force to accept his place as one of the nation's few remaining lawmen. In a world now populated by escaped convicts, paranoid mutants, and government hit squads, his only hope to save the townspeople is to enforce his own brand of frontier justice.

I thought it was great...
Any additional comments?
I am really enjoying this series. The author is very creative and the narrator does an excellent job. I'm at a loss for all the people who's reviews criticize the author's character development as being "idiotic". It's a fictional book for crying out loud. If you want realism find a different genre. Kudos to the author.

im still in awe at how great these books are
Would you consider the audio edition of The Remaining: Aftermath to be better than the print version?
I consider that Christian Rummel is a God in the world of narrators
What did you like best about this story?
The whole flippin thing!!!
What does Christian Rummel bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Oh m y God!!! He is the life blood of this most awesome story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes, every single friggin time that Jerry speaks in any of the books I wanted to transport into the book just so I could kill him. I'm still amazed that Mr. Rummel can read the captain as so likeable and Jerry as such a froggin worm. Now that takes talent.
Any additional comments?
If you haven't listened to Christian Rummel read before then now is the time, because this story of survival and perseverance is amazing.

Great Action and Narration!
Captain Lee Harden is committed to the Project Hometown mission: survive, rescue and rebuild. After surviving his first week running and fighting through the plague-infected humans, Lee has stumbled into a community of survivors. Although the leader of Camp Ryder, Bus, is willing to accept Lee’s offer of help, the opposing power-hungry politician, Jerry, doesn’t want more outsiders and challenges Lee’s veracity. Even though Lee is under medication trying to recoup from injuries he becomes the prime suspect when an attack by the infecteds appears to have had inside help. Jerry and his supporters are quick to label Lee as a spy and saboteur with connections to the brutal outside raider group led by Milo. Now Lee is forced to prove that he can fulfill his promise of providing desperately needed supplies.
Lee sets out with a handful of men in a vehicle with limited gas. Harper, an older gruff man who initially tried to turn Lee away, chooses to go just to spite Jerry. Miller, the wiry young man who helped rescue Lee while he was running from Milo's goons is another volunteer as well as a brawny older teen, Josh. Surprisingly, a jittery Doc steps up at the last minute to go with them.
The team has to scavenge gas and fight infecteds and looters just to get to the bunker location. On the return trip Lee insists on stopping in Smithfield to seek Julia, sister to Camp Ryder's cook. The survivors in Smithfield are barricaded inside the hospital. Lee hopes to make allies but instead he faces betrayal and danger. The leaders are being threatened by Milo and Lee doesn’t know who can be trusted and who can’t.
Lee and friends have to fight there way through infecteds and thugs. New characters are added as Lee gets help from another soldier, LaRouche, Julia, and Father Jim.
I was a little distressed by the foul language but I was gripped by the plot and action. D. J. Molles manages to create characters and relationship dynamics that I got invested in. The story and action kept me glued and then I was delighted with some wonderful descriptions.
Audio Notes: Christian Rummel does a terrific job with the narration. Each character gets the right voice and the intensity of the action is conveyed through the narration. It is possible that reading the book might let the reader skim over the bad language easier. Still I am definitely enjoying listening to this series.

Any additional comments?
Must listen to book 1 and then get his one. You will want to listen to it all of the way through. I dont want to give anything away with the plot but my adrenal gland was on overload and I wanted to jump into the book and get in the action. I will prob buy the rest of this series NOW.
I did find some parts of the book a lil funny , SPOILER ALERT... Military Humvee's dont have keys, lol there are a couple of other things in the book that will let you know that the writer doesn't have military experience but he does a great job none the less.

Best Zombie Series
This is my favorite series for Zombie apocalypse horror. Capt. Lee Harden is a Superhero that can be admired. The story is entertaining and well written. There isn’t the normal woman bashing and unnecessary sexual content that is normally part of the genre. I’ve read all of the books and am now enjoying the audio version. I highly recommend DJ Molles.
