Publisher's summary

Brave champions. Swords and sorcery. Breathtaking twists and turns…

In a world besieged by relentless foes, the empire stands on the brink of defeat, encircled in a grip of war.

Amidst the chaos and danger rises Stiger, a hero burdened with a tarnished legacy yet destined for epic greatness. With the aid of allies, the gnomes, the elves, and the Vass, Stiger has shattered the tribal armies of the Barrens and saved the garrison at Nabernacum.

But his trials and tests have only just begun. Haunted by a past filled with loss and dark memories, Stiger faces his greatest challenge yet: the defeat of the malevolent wizard Amaranth. Amaranth's insidious plan involves not only kidnapping Stiger's allies but also claiming his dread sword, Rarokan, and seizing Stiger's soul.

To confront this foe, Stiger must venture to a place he vowed never to return, Wackita, the volcano and a cursed land populated by gnomes and dark secrets. Accompanied by a fearsome dragon, a Knight of the Vass, elven rangers, a devotee to a dark god, and his dog, Stiger embarks on a perilous journey. What waits is a maelstrom of danger, revelation, and adventure, unlocking extraordinary powers Stiger could never imagine possible and beginning the fulfillment of a prophecy.

The empire's fate hangs in the balance. But Stiger, ever resilient, refuses to surrender. The ultimate battle to save the empire and the world is upon him, a test of courage, strength, and destiny.

If you like military fantasy and authentic battle scenes, you'll love Marc Alan Edelheit's Roman-inspired adventure series.

Good story, but stands alone from series. No progression of the overall series story

This has become one of my favorite series and worlds. I re-listen to this series as I wait for the next book. MAE continues to build the world and the depth of Characters and I am already waiting for the 9th novel.

That being said, this novel fell flat for me purely because it doesn’t progress the overall story barely at all. This novel could stand alone outside of the series and be fine. For being the longest book in the series this story could have been cut into a quarter of it and spent the rest of the space continuing the overall story.

good enjoyable listen.

liked the story overall. I know the tremendous amount of work it takes to write a book let alone multiple books so it's hard to be critical and not everyone can be happy. I highly recommend this book because it is an enjoyable story. I did find myself skipping a whole chapter at the end and the first half of another chapter because it was redundant. I kinda felt the ending fell a little flat with the wrap to set the next story up. I feel marc has done a great job of this in the past, and do look forward to the continued story.

Just OK

I am a big fan of the author and this series as a whole. But this book felt very forced to me, not tied directly to the main story, felt like a forced side quest to just get another book in the series to add to a publishers bottom line. Disappointing, I will read the next but if it much the same, I will likely not read the subsequent book.

Come on Marc!

Wow... too many words. Stiger is becoming a corn ball. Hey let's all go a on a life and death mission, but then keep saying we need to be careful. Also, for good measure, let's go attack a wizard with mostly ideas of fighting him with swords and bows and a bit of magic. That sounds like a great idea after the same wizard has imprisoned two other allies that are more powerful than anyone in the group. Finally, too many words. I skipped through entire chapters and still understood what was going on because the problem that took a few minutes to figure out somehow took two chapters to explain.
