Publisher's summary

Multimillion-copy bestselling author Wilbur Smith returns with a historical epic set in Africa.

South Africa, 1820

When Ann Waite discovers a shipwreck in Algoa Bay she is stunned to find survivors: a scarred sailor and a little boy. As the man walks away into the distance alone, Ann is left to raise the young child, Harry, in place of the baby she tragically lost at sea.

Disaster and hardship befall Ann and Harry, and desperation drives them into the path of the mysterious shipwrecked man once more. Ralph Courtney has recently escaped Robben Island with two fellow prisoners and is destined to seek his fortune at Nativity Bay, the fabled place about which his father told him stories.

But far from being a land of paradise, Ralph, Ann and their fellow settlers find themselves facing unfamiliar challenges. It isn't long before they learn their new home borders the Zulu kingdom, where the warrior king Shaka's empire spans the continent. When Ralph encounters King Shaka, it is only the beginning of a daring new adventure of loyalty and survival.

Came for Sean Barret stayed for the story!

I love Sean Barret's narration of The Drenai Saga by Gemmel..
so I went looking for something else narrated by him.
I like thecstory and then I thought I didn't like it, but I couldn't help wanting to know what Ralph Courtney was up to. Glad I stuck through the twists and turns. Looking forward to the next book.

Wilbur Smith's passing is a great loss

Wilbur Smith's last novel is so typically good it's difficult to "rate" it among the dozens of great novels he wrote. His passing is a great loss to the literary World, in particular to those of us who cannot see well enough to "read" a novel but bless the advent Audible in bringing us titles from the world's great authors. Myself, for one, will go back to the earliest release I have in my Library and listen again; the stories are simply too good to only listen once!. David McDonald
