Publisher's summary

As sociolinguistics expert Dr. Tannen reveals, no one is to blame for the familiar feeling among men and women that members of the opposite sex just don't understand them. The problem dates back to childhood, when children learn to use language in distinctly different ways; years later, their adult efforts to talk to each other often place them at cross purposes - even when both mean well and are sincerely trying to communicate. Now in this groundbreaking audio program, Dr. Tannen illustrates how the best intentions can go easily astray between spouses, family members, co-workers and friends and gives valuable insight to help you communicate better than ever before. This best seller has revolutionized the way men and women talk and listen to each other - at home, at work, and wherever the communications gap between the sexes can lead to troublesome misunderstandings.

You Just Don't Understand

This books represents an inciteful view of the linguistic differences between men and women. It takes a non-biased approach on dissecting the differences between the two sexes and how they interpret different meanings, from the same words, in identical context. Not your typical "Venus v. Mars" book.....

Insightful

I was assigned this book in a class a few semesters ago, and couldn't understand why. That was untill I read it. It is insightful, and gives explainations, to terrible relationships I have had in the past. Now when I get frustrated with someone I think back to this book, and try to understand whether we disagree or are just misunderstanding each others.

Interesting, but not helpful

Ok, so now I know that men and women think, speak, and understand things differently... Wait, doesn’t everyone already know that? Of course we do. So what! How is this content supposed to help Me use that Information to better my communication with my wife. It wasn’t helpful at all.

I was expecting this to read like the actual book.

This audiobook is way off the rails from how the actual book is read. I’m in college and was just trying to find the full audiobook to listen as I read and this audiobook has pieces of the actual book but it seems to be just thrown together poorly and not in order of the real book. Waste of money.

Terrible

I have listened to multiple self help books, this was a waste of money, very short little vignettes in monotone voice.

men and women are different -- DUH!

All I got from this "book" is that men and women are different. Duh! For those under 35 or 40 this might be a revelation, but not for those of us above. I gave this "book" a 1 because it was not possible to give it a 0. In nearly fifty years on this earth I have found that the example people used are more the exception than the rule. people, both men and women, fall everywhere within the spectrum including the stereotypical man and stereotypical woman. While the "average man" and "average woman" groups might not be coincidental, they are both further from there stereotype extremes than one might infer from listening to this "book". Do yourself two favors: remember that men and women are different; and give your 8 dollars and 90 minutes to your favorite charity.

As a small defense of this book, I've yet to find an abridged version of anything worth the money spent. Though I doubt it, it is possible that an unabridged version of this book might be worth a look.
