Resumen del Editor

This book is the inspiration of my third son, Arthur, nineteen years of age at the time it was written. Its title has been something of a family joke. At certain moments when caught up in the throes of a domestic squabble, we were near our wits' end I would pipe up with a note of sympathy: It's hard raising parents. Understandably, the phrase caught on with our four children. Over the years, this remark has provided a timely dose of relief.

This book, however, is not a joke. Rather, it is the bittersweet fruit of two and a half years, walking the razor's edge with Arthur—a tightrope walker, clown, mime, and courageous human being.

During this time, Arthur summoned up his courage to confront questions that many of us never have to face: Do I really want to go on with life? Is this a world in which I can truly feel at home, a world in which I can be myself? Arthur's questions I took to heart. Thus the sub-title of this offering: A Heart-to-Heart.

Heartfelt Stories

After listening to this book, you'd feel deeply moved. It sounds like it's not just about laughs but about real struggles. You'd relate to the challenge of understanding each other in a family. The idea that parents can also be "raised" by their kids might feel new but true. It would strike you how brave Arthur was to ask tough questions about life. You'd appreciate the honesty in sharing such personal experiences. This book would make you think about your own family differently. You'd finish the book feeling a stronger connection to your own family. It would inspire you to have more heart-to-heart talks at home.

This is a very different type of book

It's Hard Raising Parents is a complicated book. The theme is about the author's son Arthur who was 19 at the time of this writing. Arthur was born with a heart defect and at the age of 4 years had heart surgery. Arthur had learning disabilities that plagued him throughout his life. He had problems adjusting in school, with friendship and life in general. Arthur was an artist at least in his heart. He was a sensitive boy who saw things very differently than his parents. At one point Arthur's father found Arthur with a noose around his neck. Although his father does not describe this as a sucide attempt, Arthur was subsequently institutionalized. There are several interactions between Arthur and his father described in this book. I think this book is about the love Arthur and his father shared although, the relationship is also complex as you might expect and a lot of misunderstandings that took place. This book mad me sad.

Great reminders... Primer for Conversations!

This audiobook and its powerful title say it all, "It's Hard Raising Parents." I enjoyed the seven valuable lessons it provides. This book will cause you to think and probe your heart and mind. It strikes a good balance between light-hearted moments and serious times. It shares the experience within a family with real-life challenges and joys. It also frames the concept from the child's perspective that parents are being raised, too, since we never really stop growing. The chapter lessons have a biblical and theological undertone, which you may or may not appreciate. However, those with a penchant for Christianity will understand and feel right at home with the scriptural references mixed with real-life experience. I recommend it and know it will cause you to think of life differently.
