Publisher's summary

Number one New York Times best seller

In her latest book, Brené Brown writes, “If we want to find the way back to ourselves and one another, we need language and the grounded confidence to both tell our stories and to be stewards of the stories that we hear. This is the framework for meaningful connection.”

In Atlas of the Heart, Brown takes us on a journey through 87 of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. As she maps the necessary skills and an actionable framework for meaningful connection, she gives us the language and tools to access a universe of new choices and second chances - a universe where we can share and steward the stories of our bravest and most heartbreaking moments with one another in a way that builds connection.

Over the past two decades, Brown’s extensive research into the experiences that make us who we are has shaped the cultural conversation and helped define what it means to be courageous with our lives. Atlas of the Heart draws on this research, as well as on Brown’s singular skills as a storyteller, to show us how accurately naming an experience doesn’t give the experience more power, it gives us the power of understanding, meaning, and choice.

Brown shares, “I want this book to be an atlas for all of us, because I believe that, with an adventurous heart and the right maps, we can travel anywhere and never fear losing ourselves.”

Editor's Pick

A wry portrait of a decade hanging in the balance
Born in the latter half of the 1990s, I’m what you might call a ''cusp'' millennial, a generational designation that feels oddly out of time. I can’t always relate to the experiences of slightly older peers, and yet I often feel ancient and out of touch among Gen Z. I’m old enough to remember Blockbuster, the Spice Girls, and the sputter of dial-up, but a bit too young to recall the oddity of Crystal Pepsi, not to mention anything regarding politics or economics. So, whether you’re a fellow cusper in need of a history lesson or you’re just seeking a new perspective on a moment in time, Chuck Klosterman’s smart new collection The Nineties is a must-listen. In his signature style—a near-scholarly analysis of pop culture and society punctuated by moments of sly, self-aware humor, incisive commentary, and probing introspection—Klosterman unpacks everything from Bush and Clinton to Garth Brooks to Biosphere 2, ruminating on the impact of each along the way. Shunning simple rosy retrospection, Klosterman instead offers a fresh, fascinating take on a time oft-reminisced but seldom reckoned with. —Alanna M., Audible Editor

Wish more authors would present audiobooks like Brene

I haven’t finished listening to this book yet, but wanted to write a review to encourage others to join this audiobook experience because, in addition to the great content, it’s the best audiobook I’ve listened to. I did a deep dive into Dr. Brown’s work over the last month and have listened to four of her audiobooks and many podcasts. They keep getting better. What I really enjoy about this book is that Brene—an audiobook listener herself—stops and rereads sections to connect the text for understanding for those of us who (like me) are walking, biking, cooking, etc., while they listen. It’s effective for me, and I’m really enjoying the experience, especially the little extra comments and reflections she inserts. Thank you, Brene, and great job presenting your audiobook as a conversational learning experience for listeners.

Great book! Bad lefty politics for no reason!

I absolutely love Brene Brown! Such wonderful information and research! Useful and valuable beyond measure. Could definitely do without the hard left politics casually tossed in though. Funny how unaware people can be of their own divisive ways of thinking but see it so clearly in others. Try looking in the middle for truth... Maybe try turning off the news and social media for a week or so and see how you feel about all these silly politics and such. Love is the answer! Love for everyone, not just your political team!✌️😘

Where is the pdf?

The pdf with illustrations is not available in my audible library. I was looking forward to seeing the visuals as they were connected to the text.

My Favorite Brene Book Yet

This was my favorite Brene Brown book yet. Lots of connections & aha moments. I also appreciate that she understands people listen to her books differently than when they are reading her books and so she describes visuals, re-reads an important quote, etc. This is one I’m excited to listen to more than once.

Overall pretty good

I have loved all of Brené Browns books, especially Daring Greatly. My only issue is the amount of politics brought into this one. She says she tries to stay neutral and non-judgement, but makes it pretty clear what side she’s on isn’t talking from center.

love hearing the author as the narrator

The author does a great job of making you feel comfortable like she's sitting with you having a conversation. She even goes far as to verbalize what the illustrations look like in case you're driving or walking. I couldn't wait for the book but as a mom it's feels hard to make the time to sit down and read so I had to wait for the audiobook but it was well worth it!
