Superheroes don't start from glorious beginnings. Their origins are almost always marked by traumatic events that leave them helpless and scared. Batman witnessed his parents' murder. Superman was sent away from his dying planet with no one to guide him as he grew up. Orphaned Catwoman was forced to steal food to survive on the streets of Gotham. What makes these superheroes super is their determination to not be defined by helplessness. They embrace their origins, their flaws, and their mistakes and strive every day to become the best versions of themselves.

Story
After three years of living his dream as a professional baseball pitcher, Mike Robbins had an arm injury that benched him for good, and when this happened, he had to figure out who he was without the identity of "baseball player" - a process fraught with emotional highs and lows. He quickly realized that the self-criticism and self-doubt he was feeling are epidemic in our culture. Too often we base our value on our external world - our jobs, finances, appearance, or various other factors.

Refreshing read!
I really enjoyed this book! The author is around my same age and still in the thick of it with kids, which I really appreciated. It felt like getting advice from a friend — only one with a clinical background. The advice is helpful and real — easy to understand and implement — not trendy or crunchy, just authentic. I completely disagree with the previous review that this came across as pretentious — that’s the last word I would use. The author is honest and open about her experiences, which I found really refreshing. I’m looking forward to working on a few things with this guidance and coming back to this book regularly to ground myself. Definitely give it a try!

Cringey and pretentious
Author seems childish and inexperienced with life. Biased in her politics and worldview. I couldn’t even finish this one. It was hard to listen to.
