Damon has become a monster...sort of.

Betrayed and left for dead by a group of slaving nobles, he thought there was nothing left but to bleed out as he counted the number of bricks on the ceiling. But fate had other plans.

Moments before Damon's death, a gelatinous, gluttonous mimic reveals itself to him. Fearing a more gruesome and horrible death down the mimic’s gullet, Damon offers the food in his pack—sandwiches, cookies, and everything else! Encouraged by the (admittedly forced) generosity, the Mimic fuses with Damon, enhancing his body and transforming him into a half-man half-mimic monstrosity.

Once a poor, down-on-his-luck scout, Damon now has new capabilities far beyond anything anyone on Basania has seen before.

The only problem? His new bodymate’s insatiable hunger for cake...and human flesh.

It was very good till the twist at the end. It negated the main driving force behind the story. The main character was fighting very hard for his goal and risking everyone only for the twist to ruin it. It changed the whole frame of the story and it felt extremely forced.

The twist ruined it

MC fuses with an old mimic to form a symbiotic relationship. Pretty fun interactions between the MC and the mimic, with good narration. Mimic gives MC OP advantages, but he has to keep them hidden. Probably worth continuing the series

fun mimic host dynamic

It had everything! A genuinely likable MC (which is -rare- for this genre), excellent narration from all three narrators, a compelling story that involved a diverse group of side characters with their own fleshed-out personalities and goals, a plot that was never dropped and was paced well while also being compelling in and of itself.

It isn't an instant masterpiece of writing...but it has all the things you can ask for in a novel, and all of it was good!

Will definitely recommend to friends, and will pre-order further books in the series as they become available without hesitation.

This was surprisingly fantastic.

Main character and first person point of view character is difficult to enjoy, entitled and very modern points of view. Hates nobles for being entitled, but has no understanding of Duty and debts.
Treats the employees of others as extensions of them.

However, all of the secondary characters including the mimic are great fun.
World is…not satisfying, money doesn’t make sense. (A meal that costs 1 gold isn’t remarkable, but 15,000 gold is insurmountable?)

Yet, while I thought about returning this book a few times, I didn’t…and am kind of looking forward to the next installment.

SoundBooth did a great job with the production.

Great performance, and supporting characters…entitled Main Character.

I loved the take on the op companion that helps and always love a good mimic book, can’t wait for the next one!
