Publisher's summary

Earth has ascended....

Magic tears through an unsuspecting planet of humans, bringing mythology and monsters to life—and providing humanity a chance to prove their mettle.

Old grudges die hard....

All Calum Green wants is to reach what remains of his family. Ninety miles of the Scottish Highlands stand between Calum and his family home in coastal Oban. He does not want to make that trek with his cheating ex-girlfriend's bestie at his side.

Eilidh MacIntosh has always disliked Calum, and now she's armed with a bloody claymore on top of her haughty disdain. But the ascension directive is clear: humans cannot survive this new world alone—and this pair makes an annoyingly good team.

With Calum's magic and their combined bad luck, the unlikely duo accidentally trigger a rare ascension quest: to find the perpetrator of a dangerous, corrupt magic that could make all of humanity into an endangered species.

Pretty good so far

this has been for the most part a pretty good book, a little difficult sometimes to understand given the strong accent. it does add to realism of the geographic location. so I typically go for books with mc as solo, and the female character accompanying our mc is the reason why I usually only do solo. It says in synopsis that he is paired with her, but why do you have to write her to be such a b*&%. I mean come on the world is going through an apocalyptic event where they have to work together to survive and thrive. if there was a way to skip her parts and not miss parts of the story that might be important I would. the past between them should not have been an issue, as he did nothing to her ( being emotionless isn't a crime) and since meeting he's basically carried the team, if I'm being honest not to mention healing her. I know it sounds like I have hangups (maybe) I just think she could be more grateful and less antagonistic. UPD: her demeanor does serve a purpose. (however book 2 is where that becomes clear) I still stand by my assessment

More about the good than the bad in people

The mixing of languages, I would also have liked to have the songs sung. The depth of the characters

I got this on a whim

This book is amazing. I got it on a whim and it is everything I could have hoped for. The narrator is amazing and the story is a breath of fresh air to post-apocalypse litrpg. I need the next book, like now.

Do you know Gaelic?

To much plot armour for the learning of abilities. Once they give you a name for an ability its like the author expects you to know the language now. Frustrating.
