This seemingly uneventful business trip soon spirals into a riveting tale of intrigue, deception, and smuggling.
Carlson's inquiring nature leads him to notice suspicious activities at the sawmill operated by Madeleine's father. Unusual behaviors, clandestine truck movements, and the enigmatic exchange of pit-props hint at something far more sinister. Sharing his suspicions at the Rovers’ Club in London, Carlson captures the interest of Claud Hilliard from the Customs Department. What began as idle curiosity now becomes a full-blown investigation, as Hilliard joins Carlson on a deceptive "vacation" back to France to uncover the truth.
The plot thickens as Carlson and Hilliard discover that the Coburns are entangled in a high-stakes smuggling ring known as the Pit-Prop Syndicate. With the intelligent and meticulous Inspector Willis from Scotland Yard hot on their trail, the syndicate’s web of deceit begins to unravel. As Willis navigates through clever traps and detailed surveillance, he unpacks the syndicate's true agenda, revealing plans to flee to Brazil under the guise of legitimate business operations. Tense and thrilling, the story reaches its climax when Willis arrests the conspirators moments before their escape, ensuring justice is served.
The intense investigation and subsequent courtroom drama are interspersed with personal moments of connection between Carlson and Madeleine. Their blossoming romance provides a tender counterpoint to the high-stakes thriller, culminating in a satisfying and heartfelt conclusion.
