Die Gegensätze arm und reich, treu und untreu stehen im Mittelpunkt dieser Geschichten und Gesellschaftsporträts. Einen Schwerpunkt bilden in dieser Zusammenstellung allerdings die Basil-Geschichten. 1928, während er mit seinem Roman "Zärtlich ist die Nacht" kämpfte, begann Fitzgerald eine Reihe von Geschichten über Basil Duke Lee zu schreiben, eine fiktionalisierte Version seines jüngeren Ichs. Ausgehend von seinen Erfahrungen als Kind und Jugendlicher schrieb Fitzgerald acht thematisch zusammenhängende Geschichten, die in der Saturday Evening Post (später dann auch teilweise in der Collection Taps at Reveille) veröffentlicht wurden. Sie erzählen von seinen Erlebnissen in der Zeitspanne als elfjähriger Junge in Buffalo, New York, bis zu seinem Eintritt in die Princeton University im Jahr 1913. Flankiert werden sie von Kurzgeschichten, die sportliche Hintergründe, eine Affäre mit einer Schauspielerin oder auch Erinnerungen an seine Militärzeit reflektieren. Dabei speiste sich seine Themenauswahl immer wieder auch mit eigenen Erlebnissen. Bei einer üppigen Party auf dem Pickfair-Anwesen in Beverly Hills lernte Fitzgerald zum Beispiel die 17-jährige Lois Moran kennen, ein Starlet, das durch ihre Rolle in Stella Dallas (1925) berühmt geworden war. Moran und Fitzgerald, die verzweifelt nach intellektueller Unterhaltung suchten, diskutierten stundenlang über Literatur und Philosophie. Fitzgerald war damals 31 Jahre alt und hatte seine besten Jahre bereits hinter sich, aber die verliebte Moran hielt ihn für einen kultivierten, gut aussehenden und begabten Schriftsteller. Folglich strebte sie eine Beziehung mit ihm an. Das Starlet wurde für den Autor zur Muse, und er beschrieb sie in seiner Kurzgeschichte "Magnetism" (Anziehung), in der ein junges Hollywood-Filmstarlet einen verheirateten Schriftsteller in seiner sexuellen Hingabe zu seiner Frau ins Wanken bringt.
F. Scott Fitzgerald war auch ein großer Fan des College-Footballs, insbesondere von Princeton. "The Bowl" (Das Football Stadion) bezieht sich auf das Heimstadion von Yale. Die enorme Zahl der schweren Verletzungen war bereits damals ein großes Problem. Fast hundert Jahre später steht das Spiel immer noch vor denselben Herausforderungen.
