All About Emotion, In a Variety of Ways

I've been familiar with this author's work for a few years now, and the areas he explores include some that are of professional interest to me as an addictions nurse. This book is very down-to-earth and approachable, and the author’s compassion for the reader (and people in general) rings out from every page. I appreciate the book’s well-organized structure. It starts with looking at what emotions are, our coping strategies (the good, the bad, and the ugly), and how the brain isn't always our friend when dealing with emotions. The next section explores how to change your approach to emotion so that it enhances your life and perception of self so that you might feel more in control of what sometimes seems beyond conscious control. The following section discusses and provides exercises to integrate emotional dichotomies like compassion and insensitivity; courage and fear, and joy and boredom. He provides exercises to help you think and work through these. This review is for the audiobook version of the book, and I wish the author had included a brief downloadable PDF so you could go over the specific exercises and other pertinent things that would have been nice to see on a page, not just heard. I love that Audible offers this option for authors to augment their audiobooks, and I appreciate it when authors take advantage of it. Finally, the author explores what he calls “emotional applications”: how emotions impact our relationships, work, and other areas of life, and are even at the core of addiction. While several things mentioned in this book are quite common to see in self-help books, like journaling and focusing on gratitude, some topics are surprising in a book like this, like addiction. What he said rings true to my experience as an addictions nurse, and I appreciate his insights. If you wish to get a better sense of what emotions are and how they can amplify and improve your life, get this book or audiobook. I'm going to have to take several listens to fully get and appreciate all that this author offers here.

Wonderful

I really enjoyed this book. The author has a wonderful writing style. He covers a lot of information without parroting every other book on the market. The author introduces concepts that give a different way of looking at things, a new point of view. The exercises included in the book are beneficial on a deeper level than those in normal “self-help” books. Listening to the audio book I was able to concentrate on the content more because I don’t sit still long enough to read (and feel guilty if I do!) The only issue I had was that the narrator’s voice was so soothing and gentle that it made me sleepy!!!.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Great Material

This book does a great job of covering a range of topics. It includes background, tools, and applications. Background covers an introduction to emotions, coping skills and the change process. Then the next section describes 5 key emotions and a broad menu of tools to help with each. In the last section, applications are made to explain emotions in the workplace, relationships and similar applications. Thought-provoking, insightful and useful. Will definitely check out the other books in the series by this author.

We need to learn how to manage our emotions!

I'm so glad that Kenneth produced this audiobook. In my opinion, managing our emotions is a vital skill to live a better, happier, and more joyful life. Unfortunately, this isn't taught in school, and although all of us experience emotions all day, every day, most people don't understand how to handle them. The author explains what strategies we can use to understand our emotions, and that's why I think this audiobook would be helpful for anyone to start managing emotions and their influence on our life.

Life-Changing Information

Excellent book and very nice to listen to (the narrator did a great job).
if you want to dive deep and understand your emotions to design your life, I highly recommend you give it a try.
It's very well researched and with full of info, but easy to follow in real life.
I've already experienced a few deep shifts in my interactions/communication with family and friends. Getting less triggered;)
