Publisher's summary

From the universe of the Until the End of the World series. (Note: The City Series can be heard before or after the Until the End of the World series)

Sylvie Rossi has the loner thing down pat, with the exception of her best friend, Grace. But when the two are trapped in a hospital during the last gasp of a dying city, alone time is no longer an option. A nurse's offer of sanctuary promises Sylvie the supplies she needs to survive the zombies - it's the coexisting with people that might do her in.

Eric Forrest will do whatever it takes to get into the dead city for his sister, including ending up dead himself. He's used to taking risks, but with every mile he travels death looks likelier and likelier, and finding his sister may be his only prospect for survival - if he can make it home.

Sylvie doesn't need more than food, water, and shelter. Eric wants only to find his sister. But sometimes what we think we need isn't what we need at all, and what we find is more than we expected.

Feel Good Zombie Stories!

Any additional comments?

Loved it! If you are new to this author, stop! Check out her trilogy + novella, Until The End of The World. Mordacious is a spin off of that series. It is not essential that you read Until the End of the World first to enjoy this book, but I recommend you do.

Do you like zombie / survival stories – but hate to get bogged down with endless tragedy and after tragedy? I love apocalyptic novels, but I am often turned off by plots that take the reader down a dark hole (evil humans, society at its worst, characters spending the entire book trying to find a way out of a hopeless and ugly scenarios). While Fleming’s novels include all these elements, her books center on the dynamics of the survival group. The plot is centered on her characters, their struggles, and growth – that happen to be in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

Fleming wrote the first “Feel Good” Zombie story I have ever read – and it was such a breath of fresh air! That is, when my heart wasn’t racing from fearing for my beloved characters well being and safety.

Narration: I am a narrator snob. I have loved Luke Daniels since “The Druid” series… he does a fine job here. I am new to Therese and thought she was a little better fit for the character she’s playing. The story is told from two points of view, so that is why we get a male and female narrator. When the two characters are together, the narrators get to play off each other, the narration really shines. I saw one negative review of the narration and I honestly don’t know what they are talking about. The narration is great.

Can't wait for the next installment!

Loved it the second go round!

I read the book the first time and ordered the audio the second time. I typically NEVER read books more than once but this book is an exception. Read It! You won't be disappointed!

Love Sarah Lyons Fleming's work!

Fifth book I have listened to on Audible...and have not been disappointed! Was a little hard the first chapter getting into the voice of one of the characters...but fell in love after listening to the characters story.

Must.Have.More

loved every second of this book.
I had been hoping to find out what happened to Eric and Maria ever since I got hooked on Until the End of the World (where you'll learn about Eric's sister Cassie and Maria's daughters Penny and Anna).
Ms. Fleming has a way of tying up loose ends so you have a sense of closure and leaving some frayed so you'll want more.
Now I need to know what happened to Grace's family - hopefully in the next book....please!

LOVE HER

Overall Assessment:
FINALLY! I have been waiting for this book since Sarah Lyons Fleming announced it after releasing the last book in her last series Until the End of the World. The City Series will be on the same timeline as UTEOTW. Of course, it did not disappoint! I have been waiting to hear what happened to Maria (Penny and Ana’s mom from UTEOTW) and Eric (Cassie’s brother). I am so glad we finally get some answers! I’m so excited to see what she will do with Sylvie, Eric, and co.!

What I liked:
– Luke Daniels perfectly captured Eric's witty and snarky personality. His parts were laugh-out-loud funny at times.
– Therese Plummer did a great job as well, I felt Sylvie's pain and uncertainty through her narration.
– Sarah’s character development and world building are flawless, as always.
– The main characters are complex and I can’t help rooting for Sylvie and Eric!
– Supporting characters are not washed out by the main characters and hold their own depth.
– I love that I am able to match the timeline and characters up from the other series to this one. It’s a little heartbreaking though knowing that Eric is alive and well, but Cassie thinks he’s dead :(

What I didn’t:
– uh, nothing.

Would I recommend this book to family and/or friends?
Yes!!! Seriously, read it. Like, now. And then go read the Until the End of the World Series!

Love this version of a zombie apocalypse

I absolutely adored Sarah Lyon Fleming's Until the End of the World series, and think I liked this start of The City series at least just as much if not a bit more.

This sister series is set in New York, in the city, rather than out in the country and we meet Sylvie, Grace, Maria, Jorge, and Eric at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. The story is told through Sylvie and Eric's POVs. Eric is Cassie's (from UTEOTW) brother, and Maria is Penny's mother.

So far, I'm loving this gentler style of how this group survives. There's not a lot of heavy action, but there is a lot of learning how to survive a zombie apocalypse and creating of communities (and families!).

The character developments really give you a chance to get to know everyone and I managed to fall in love with them all. In her last series, SLF broke my heart a few times, so I keep waiting for her to do the same here, so although I'm extremely eager to read the next book, I'm just a little bit skeered.

I bought both the ebook and the audio and would switch back and forth depending on what I was doing. Major props to Therese Plummer and Luke Daniels on their brilliant performances as Sylvie and Eric. And the narration style was brilliant as Therese did ALL the female voices and Luke did all the male voices. I have cringed at some of the voices used when women try to do men's voices and visa versa. This book narration was genius! I never cringed once and just got lost in the story.

A good story

Enjoyable, if you liked her "Until the end of the world" series you will like these. I will buy the rest as they come out. The narrators were good. The girl Overacted a little and the guys kid voice is really creepy. Pretty sure they could have had a kid read the 5 lines without breaking child labor laws. but I always get creeped out with adults trying to sound like children. Over all it was good, not to light not too dark.

This book is so engrossing!

Where does Mordacious rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of my favorites series was Until the end of the World by the same author. This is along the same lines as that series with new characters. I am so enthralled by this book that I can't wait for the second.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Eric and his relentless good nature attitude. I like how he compliments Sylvie.

What does Luke Daniels and Therese Plummer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Both bring a stellar performance with accents and different voices for each character. If the writing is what makes the characters real and tangible, then the voices they lend makes the characters is what brings them to life.
