Why do some products get more word of mouth than others? Why does some online content go viral? Word of mouth makes products, ideas, and behaviors catch on. It's more influential than advertising and far more effective. Can you create word of mouth for your product or idea? According to Berger, you can. Whether you operate a neighborhood restaurant, a corporation with hundreds of employees, or are running for a local office for the first time, the steps that can help your product or idea become viral are the same.

If you're like most people, you think that your choices and behaviors are driven by your individual personal tastes and opinions. You wear a certain jacket because you like the way it looks. You picked a particular career because you found it interesting. The notion that our choices are driven by our own personal thoughts and opinions is patently obvious. Right? Wrong. Without our realizing it, other people's behavior has a huge influence on everything we do at every moment of our lives, from the mundane to the momentous occasion.

Thrive or die: That's the rule of evolution. Despite this brutal logic, some species have learned to survive in even the most hostile conditions. Others couldn't - and perished. While incremental genetic adaptations hone the physiology of nearly every creature on this planet, there's another evolutionary force that is just as important: the power of choice. In this explosive investigation into the limits of endurance, journalist Scott Carney discovers how humans can wedge control over automatic physiological responses into the breaking point between stress and biology.

Great marketers don't use consumers to solve their company's problem; they use marketing to solve other people's problems. Their tactics rely on empathy, connection, and emotional labor instead of attention-stealing ads. When done right, marketing seeks to make change in the world.

Startup advice tends to be a lot of platitudes repackaged with new buzzwords, but Traction is something else entirely. As Gabriel Weinberg and Justin Mares learned from their own experiences, building a successful company is hard. For every startup that grows to the point where it can go public or be profitably acquired, hundreds of others sputter and die.

Resumen del Editor
"Jonah Berger is one of those rare thinkers who blends research-based insights with immensely practical guidance. I am grateful to be one of the many who have learned from this master teacher." (Jim Collins, author Good to Great, coauthor Built to Last)
From the author of New York Times best sellers Contagious and Invisible Influence comes a revolutionary approach to changing anyone's mind.
Everyone has something they want to change. Marketers want to change their customers' minds and leaders want to change organizations. Start-ups want to change industries and nonprofits want to change the world. But change is hard. Often, we persuade and pressure and push, but nothing moves. Could there be a better way?
This book takes a different approach. Successful change agents know it's not about pushing harder, or providing more information, it's about being a catalyst. Catalysts remove roadblocks and reduce the barriers to change. Instead of asking, "How could I change someone's mind?" they ask a different question: "Why haven’t they changed already? What’s stopping them?"
The Catalyst identifies the key barriers to change and how to mitigate them. You'll learn how catalysts change minds in the toughest of situations: how hostage negotiators get people to come out with their hands up and how marketers get new products to catch on, how leaders transform organizational culture and how activists ignite social movements, how substance abuse counselors get addicts to realize they have a problem, and how political canvassers change deeply rooted political beliefs.
This book is designed for anyone who wants to catalyze change. It provides a powerful way of thinking and a range of techniques that can lead to extraordinary results. Whether you're trying to change one person, transform an organization, or shift the way an entire industry does business, this book will teach you how to become a catalyst.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

Change your mind first
"I waltzed right into Jonah Berger’s The Catalyst half expecting a list of ambiguous "persuasive" conversation techniques loosely rooted in pseudo-science. The expectation had nothing to do with any reputation on Mr. Berger’s behalf, I’ve just been around the business/self dev block enough to be very wary of half-baked nonsense. But this one gets real. I found myself getting uncomfortable at times, as Berger uses raw and very real political examples (from both sides of the aisle) to illustrate numerous biases and persuasion roadblocks. It’s not a political discussion, by and large, but the persuasion tenets Berger covers are almost painfully revealing, and were far enough outside my baseline expectations to be surprisingly illuminating. I’m used to business title performances being quick, peppy, and forgettable, but narrators Fred Irby and Keith Nobbs are emphatic and deliberative, which really helps insist upon the key aspects of the content here. Making it the whole experience very… persuasive."

In Silicon Valley slang, a "bozo explosion" is what causes a lean, mean, fighting machine of a company to slide into mediocrity. As Guy Kawasaki puts it, "If the two most popular words in your company are partner and strategic, and partner has become a verb, and strategic is used to describe decisions and activities that don't make sense"...then it's time for a reality check.

Negotiations are incredibly stressful and can bring out the worst in people. Wouldn’t it be better if there were a principled way to negotiate? Wouldn’t it be even better if there were a way to treat people fairly and get treated fairly in a negotiation? Split the Pie offers a new approach that does both—a field-tested method that reframes how negotiations play out. Barry Nalebuff, a professor at Yale School of Management, helps identify what’s really at stake in a negotiation: the “pie.” The negotiation pie is the additional value created through an agreement to work together.

Excellent Book for Everyone
This is a well researched and written book on something that all people want: how to persuade and change minds and behaviors. It’s a book on the art and science of persuasion. The roadmap that the author presents is backed up by numerous documented examples where behavioral changes occur as a result of five skillful and graceful approaches that produce results. In essence, this is a book about effective communication. The strategies outlined in the book can be applied to any industry and/or personal relationships. It’s a roadmap to conflict resolution and communication success.

Amazing!
The Catalyst provides an incredibly useful roadmap for people looking to introduce a new idea, product or service that might otherwise receive pushback from their target audience. Highly recommended.

Absolutely amazing
Completely new understanding of how people change their minds vs how people argue their points. Very valuable.

Excellent content
Useful, actionable content and insights backed by substantive examples (unlike many of these types of books, which focus on superstars as though they’re regular folk). The professional, (non-author) narration was appreciated and excellent, though I’m not sure why they switched to a different person for the “case studies.” That was the only miss as that narrator was mindlessly reading text.
