Resumen del Editor
The book has information for patients and practitioners on optimizing mitochondrial function for greater health and longevity.
Why do we age? Why does cancer develop? What's the connection between heart failure and Alzheimer's disease or infertility and hearing loss? Can we extend lifespan, and if so, how? What is the exercise paradox? Why do antioxidant supplements sometimes do more harm than good? Many will be amazed to learn that all these questions, and many more, can be answered by a single point of discussion: mitochondria and bioenergetics.
In Mitochondria and the Future of Medicine, naturopathic doctor Lee Know tells the epic story of mitochondria - the widely misunderstood and often-overlooked powerhouses of our cells. The legendary saga began over two billion years ago, when one bacterium entered another without being digested, which would evolve to create the first mitochondrion. Since then, for life to exist beyond single-celled bacteria, it's the mitochondria that have been responsible for this life-giving energy. By understanding how our mitochondria work, in fact, it is possible to add years to our lives, and life to our years.
Current research, however, has revealed a dark side: many seemingly disconnected degenerative diseases have tangled roots in dysfunctional mitochondria. However, modern research has also endowed us with the knowledge on how to optimize its function, which is of critical importance to our health and longevity.
Lee Know offers cutting-edge information on supplementation and lifestyle changes for mitochondrial optimization, such as CoQ10, D-Ribose, cannabinoids, and ketogenic dietary therapy and how to implement their use successfully.
Mitochondria and the Future of Medicine is an invaluable resource for practitioners interested in mitochondrial medicine and the true roots of chronic illness and disease as well as anyone interested in optimizing their health.

Are you taking calcium or vitamin D? This book could save your life! Learn the secret to avoiding osteoporosis and heart disease. Millions of people take calcium and Vitamin D supplements thinking they're helping their bones. The truth is, without the addition of Vitamin K2, such a health regimen could prove dangerous. Without Vitamin K2, the body cannot direct calcium to the bones where it's needed; instead, the calcium resides in soft tissue, like the arteries, leading to a combination of osteoporosis and atherosclerosis, or the dreaded "calcium paradox".

Chronic fatigue, burnout, brain fog—no matter what we call it, our constant feeling of being drained affects all that we hold dear. But the very real culprits of our fatigue don't lie in our preconceived notions of caffeine intake or adrenal fatigue, nor does the replenishment of our energy lie in overhauling our lifestyle in time-consuming and unrealistic ways. Instead, the core underlying cause lies in our cells, specifically our mitochondrial deficiency, and the solution can be found in simple, straightforward, nutritional strategies that address our body’s biology.

On April 10, 2019, award-winning astrophysicist Heino Falcke presented the first image ever captured of a black hole at an international press conference - a turning point in astronomy that Science magazine called the scientific breakthrough of the year. That photo was captured with the unthinkable commitment of an intercontinental team of astronomers who transformed the world into a global telescope. While this image achieved Falcke’s goal in making a black hole “visible” for the first time, he recognizes that the photo itself asks more questions for humanity than it answers.

Historia
Chronic fatigue, burnout, brain fog—no matter what we call it, our constant feeling of being drained affects all that we hold dear. But the very real culprits of our fatigue don't lie in our preconceived notions of caffeine intake or adrenal fatigue, nor does the replenishment of our energy lie in overhauling our lifestyle in time-consuming and unrealistic ways. Instead, the core underlying cause lies in our cells, specifically our mitochondrial deficiency, and the solution can be found in simple, straightforward, nutritional strategies that address our body’s biology.

In this fascinating and thought-provoking book, author Nick Lane brings together the latest research findings in the exciting field of mitochondria research to reveal how our growing understanding of mitochondria is shedding light on how complex life evolved, why sex arose (why don't we just bud?), and why we age and die. This understanding is of fundamental importance, both in understanding how we and all other complex life came to be, but also in order to be able to control our own illnesses, and delay our degeneration and death.

The United States spends an excess $1.5 trillion annually on health care compared to other wealthy countries—yet the amount of time that Americans live in good health ranks a lowly 68th in the world. At the heart of the problem is Big Pharma, which funds most clinical trials and therefore controls the research agenda, withholds the real data from those trials as corporate secrets, and shapes most of the information relied upon by health care professionals.

Inspired by both Thoreau and Mr. Blandings, A Place of My Own not only works to convey the history and meaning of all human building, it also marks the connections between our bodies, our minds, and the natural world.

We live in a world of seeds. From our morning toast to the cotton in our clothes, they are quite literally the stuff and staff of life, supporting diets, economies, and civilizations around the globe. Just as the search for nutmeg and the humble peppercorn drove the Age of Discovery, so did coffee beans help fuel the Enlightenment and cottonseed help spark the Industrial Revolution. And from the fall of Rome to the Arab Spring, the fate of nations continues to hinge on the seeds of a Middle Eastern grass known as wheat.

Mitochondria; Not just ATP energy generators...
If you're looking to build a house, you don't start building the roof. You start with the foundation, build the rest of the framework from the ground up. Same thing with the human body when it comes to health and wellness. Mitochondria are the foundation of health at a cellular level.
When Mitochondria function optimally, it means the rest of your body and it's metabolism is working as it should. When your metabolism is off, it impacts your Mitochondria and subsequently energy production and overall health and wellness. Its a cyclical relationship and one that we generally don't think of. We tend to think that the Mitochondria just handle their business as part of normal metabolic function.
Unfortunately that's not the case. There are so many factors that go into metabolic function that it would take an entire book to explain them all in detail. This is that book. If you're looking to optimize health, and understand that you build a strong house from the foundation up - this book is essential reading.
The great thing is you don't need a medical degree to understand it either. A basic level of biology, physics and anatomy and physiology is enough to really get a lot of value from this material.

VERY Technical
If you don't know anything about cellular biology or biochemistry, you will likely not understand 75-80% of the material in this book. However, it was still an important book to have heard because it draws very important and useful conclusions and cites very convincing research to support those conclusions. If you are interested in health and would like to learn more about how intertwined mitochondrial issues are to health, this book is worth your time.

Amazing deep dive down a spectacular rabbit hole of science and health
I have thoroughly enjoyed every insight that this book provided. While it answered many questions I had leading into it, it also sparked many more, and I often found myself pausing the book to investigate the very thoughts and ideas that this book created.
Nothing short of an educational adventure in microbiology, biochemistry, and self discovery.
