If you want to learn how to overcome depression, then keep reading....

Your thoughts inform your feelings, which then inform your actions. When depressed, this is a vicious cycle that keeps you trapped in bad feelings. By adjusting your thoughts, you’ll have fewer negative feelings and respond differently to the world around you. You’ll learn to break the negative cycle and become happier in the process.

As well as guidance on how to use CBT to its greatest advantage, you’ll find studies, information on the physical aspects of depression and therapy, motivations to improve your life, and other practical excerpts. These provide an important support tool in your own journey. Seeing such proof of how well CBT works and how it can improve your life will help you move forward with it and put your all in.

You’ll learn:

  • How to break the negative cycle and become happier in the process.
  • How to recognize your negative thoughts, or cognitive distortions, for exactly what they are - lies that depression tells your brain to keep the cycle going.
  • Several common types of cognitive distortions and how to recognize them in your thinking.
  • How to be able to identify them and see the roles they play in your feelings and behaviors.
  • How to challenge them and change how they affect you.

Very often you have negative thoughts that don't help you live your life peacefully, and you've already tried many times to get rid of it yourself. Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, has proven itself to be one of the greatest and longest-lasting treatments for depression. It focuses on challenging negative thoughts based in faulty beliefs or assumptions, and replacing them with positive ones. Buy this book right now!

This good is an excellent primer on cognitive behavioral therapy techniques and goes beyond just recognizing and replacing cognitive distortions and into some more holistic life changes to help readers battle depression. While this book is probably not a true replacement for CBT with a therapist or counselor for most people, it’s a worthwhile complement to therapy and a valuable resource to introduce CBT. For the most part, it is well narrated, informative, and accessible, which is what you want in a self-help audiobook.

The audiobook begins with two “chapters” of legal disclaimers and a chapter of cheerful introduction by the author. The part of the book most people will likely care about is Chapter 1 of the book, but “Chapter 4” on Audible.

Clement Hawk, the author, begins with a description of both CBT and depression. The discussion of how a depressed brain functions is simplistic, but this is not a textbook and it certainly conveys the main mechanisms that occur with depression as I have understood them. Next, Hawk writes at length about journaling and calls it a prerequisite for CBT techniques. Hawk’s tips make journaling approachable even to someone like me who is normally resistant to journaling.

Next is a dive into several types of cognitive distortions, including examples and common ways to recognize them. This discussion, much like the distortions themselves, can be daunting and difficult to navigate without taking notes. Hawk asks the reader to write down their negative or automatic thoughts as they come, to the extent possible. He breaks down ways to recognize the thoughts, not only as negative or automatic, but also as illogical, unrealistic, based on unfounded assumption, or mere opinion. This was, to me, the most powerful part of the book, as the author does a thorough job helping the reader confront the thoughts and understand that they are distortions.

The thought-replacement portion got slightly short shrift in the book. That said, thought-replacement in CBT tends to be very personal and context-dependent, and Hawk gives the reader a good jumping-off point to replace their own negative thoughts and distortions with more realistic or evidence-based statements. Hawk also takes the time to mention complementary actions that assist in the battle against depression, including taking care of your physical health, cutting toxic people out of your life, and asking your support system for the help you need, as well as advice for maintenance after your depression has abated. I was impressed that a book on CBT went beyond just the cannon of therapeutic techniques to address the whole person struggling with depression.

The narration by Linn R. Thomas was a good fit for the audiobook. Thomas has a steady, gentle voice and cadence that kept me engaged and was generally comforting. There were a couple audio anomalies (unnatural pauses/cuts, a moment of static, and a tinny quality to the recording of the conclusion), and once or twice, Thomas had a Siri-esque inflection, but otherwise the narration and sound quality were strong.

There were a couple detractors that kept me from giving a five-star review: First, there were more than a couple times when the author asked the reader for a review on Amazon; it was jarring and out of step with what was otherwise a reader-focused book. Second, the book, toward the beginning, tries to sell itself as an alternative to expensive therapy—one that you can do “on your own.” Although Hawk mentions the importance of being with others in treating depression later in the book, the sales pitch at the outset seemed to encourage isolation and had the ring of “you should buy my book instead of seeking professional help.”

Overall, this book is an effective self-help resource for CBT and depression. Four Stars. This book was given to me for free at my request, and I provided this voluntary review.

I've always been fascinated by CBT, especially as someone that deals with depression, anxious tendencies and whatnot. This audiobook blew me away with information. I've had conversations with various mental health professionals over the years about cognitive behavioral therapy and while I had a vague understanding of it.

A fascinating and detailed listen
