Publisher's summary

From New York Times best-selling author Jeffery Deaver comes a tale of a bucolic getaway and an unsettling spirit.

Amanda and Charlie are spending their first weekend away in months. They’ve rented a luxurious vacation house on Lost Valley Lake. Swimming, bicycling, and romance are the order of the day, and all is good. That is, until someone - or something - appears on the shore across the lake, just as the sky turns gray and the water chill and choppy.

When the apparition, or whatever it might be, grows closer and closer, it soon becomes clear that there are certain types of evil that you can’t protect yourself from with locked doors and windows.

And perhaps you can’t protect yourself from them at all.

Not at all bad for a freebie.

This is a short story where the characters are Fairly will developed And the story Is as well..Not the best thing I've ever listened to but if you just have a short amount of time and want to complete a book I would recommend this.

Story was generic but still quite fun.

Zoe Chao did a good job at narrating.

At first, I had very little sympathy for either Amanda or Charlie. I knew there would be a morally unattractive character or two or three somewhere in this story, and/or somebody haunted by some sort of (proverbial) "inner demons"; yet, I didn't know who the the most bankrupt characters were, or who was haunted by "inner demons", or even what exactly the nature of the "inner demons" (psychological "demons"? a tainted past? other?). Also, the story not only resembles a TV show, but also has characters who like to watch TV. Eventually, the plot started to thicken, and then came the quick climax and denouement and then the finale.

So, if this admittedly pedestrian tale be (as some people claim) Deaver's worst published story, then I might want to hear some of his better stories some time in the future.

I probably should start with listening to Deaver's (presumably less generic) short stories on audio.

short and sweet

Good book to listen to. The narrator's voice is pleasant and definitely was not expecting the ending.

Good narration, so-so story.

Good narration. This short story has very little intrigue or depth. The ending is predictable. Fortunately a free Audible book.

Always Protected!!!

I wasn't very interested in the story at the beginning until the stranger shows up...then the story get interesting and then Charlie get weird. The story of her friend being interspersed throughout was sort of confusing until it was all explained by watching the three episode and speaking with the owners...Shiver!!!!

Jeffrey Deaver is definitely a master of suspense, and created of stories that are of this world at the same time not of this world.
