Publisher's summary

The are few forces more powerful than the Will of a fully trained Warden, but those who endeavor to become Wardens must first escape the crucible fires of Black Mark Academy. Very few who enter will leave as Wardens, and many will never leave at all.

Lillin ends up at Black Mark Academy not as a willing volunteer, but as forced penance for a past wrong. She soon discovers that the training involved in becoming a Warden is more nightmarish than she could have imagined. With her face marked permanently for her past crimes, she has to either survive the Warden's cruel training program or die in the process. She must discover the determination within herself to move forward and kindle the flames of the eternal fire, the Warden's Will.

Warden's Will is the first novel in a new series by Heath Pfaff, author of the Chaos Awakens trilogy, and The Hungering Saga. He has had multiple books appear in Amazon's top ten fantasy rankings and is well known for his dark and sometimes horrific fantasy stories.

This is rough, but great

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Overall a great listen, but there are some parts that will leave you feeling gutted as you go through it. Not the same level of a hit as GOT but you can't trust that things will turn out the way you expect.

This is definitely a tortured work, but I found it all the better because of it. There's so much feeling from some of these characters that it becomes hard to follow them. Amy Landon does a great job with the large cast, and some of those voices will stick with me longer than I might want XD. I'm worried to say too much more, I prefer to avoid spoilers in my reviews, but if you're looking for a fantasy setting with some real ache and pain in it, get this.

A good start to a new series

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was a suprisingly good book. I really thought it was put together well, and really sucked me in quickly and kept me there the whole time. It is a great blend of sci fi and fantasy. The world-building is superb. The character building is also done very well. The narration is good. All in all, this made for a great listen. This is a series I will definitely follow.

A blend of learning, death, and will

Think hunger games meets, magic meets Stargate, and more. Sentenced to death for a crime she didn’t mean to commit she has one chance. Survive the training to become a warden. something few do and something no deady has ever done. Your life is over. For others if they fail they drop out and get jobs as guards. For her if she fails she dies because she is already sentenced to death. Secrets, allies and enemies abound. Challenges that will break you and remake you await. Is she strong enough not to break? If she does does break is she strong enough to remake herself to become a warden? Really unique and twisted tale. Well written and well narrated. Where there's Will there is a way

This is a really good gritty fantasy book. The characters are great and really do change a quite a bit from where they started which is always a plus. If you like books that take place in training academies than you will definitely like this, there is a lot of training, trials and tribulations and people striving to be better or the best. The training missions are very good and can get pretty crazy. The world this takes place in is very interesting and this book really only reveals the tip of the iceberg I expect future books to build on this world and its mysteries much more, this book seemed more about character building and an introduction to the world and its 'magic system'.

The narrator Amy Landon did a great job and was a great voice for the main character Lillin as well as the other characters of the book.

I eagerly await the other books in the series to see where things go from here and what is really going on with the Wardens in this world and the mystery/truth behind the Everburn and the Blackened.

Gruesome

The world that Heath Pfaff has created is beyond brutal. This book is more of a horror fantasy than an adventure fantasy. Heath is not afraid to give you the gory details.

Lilan thought her world was bad until she was forced into Wardens training. Now her life is a living hell.

Amy Landon does a good job of telling the story and keeping the listener in suspense.

Awesome story and performance

I have read this story before, and had greatly enjoyed it. However the way Amy Landon performed this book was fantastic! She highlighted details and nuances I did not notice when I read the book. I was driving round trip from Central Ohio to grand Rapids Michigan and was spellbound for the entire trip. I highly recommend this.
Some story details. This is between fantasy and dark fantasy. If you like Michael Moorcock, or Terry Goodkind, you will love this book. I recommend Heath Pfaff over both of those two authors.

Intense

This is one of the most intense books I have listened to in years. The story line is predictable enough, but the way Pfaff builds the characters and the world they live in is what makes this book. It is also disturbing as the trials Lilan must go through to save her life and become a warden are nothing short of horrendous torture. I am not sure any human could survive the ordeals the warden training puts her through. I know I couldn't, and I am pretty tough. Well, she manages to survive even the horrible water test. I will want listen to the next installment to see what Pfaff creates for our heroine. The narration is well done. Recommend this one.

Good new dark series

The world of Warden’s Will is like a dark Hogwarts. Teenagers are stuck in a fortress and learning how to be strong and later learn the Will, which is kind of like a magic. There is things I wish he went into more though. I think a book on the nurses would be good. The narrator did a great job!

A Strong Will

I was at first shocked of how dark this book turned. I found myself slowly drawn to the tough and unmercifully journey it takes to become a Warden. The story was filled with action and very entertaining. The narrator was a perfect fit and was able to give distinct tones to every characters. Overall, Definitely worth a listen.
